The San Francisco 49ers received mixed injury updates on Friday. Star receiver Deebo Samuel practiced for the second day in a row, while All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams did not practice due to a sore toe.
Samuel was expected to be out for “a couple” of games after hurting his calf in a Week 2 loss to Minnesota, but he managed to practice on a limited basis this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.
Williams missed practice on Friday after saying his toe was sore from the previous day’s practice and is also questionable for Sunday.
“It acted up a little bit in practice yesterday and it was just too sore for him to go today,” coach Kyle Shanahan explained.
Tight end George Kittle had no injury concerns for the upcoming game after sitting out last week’s match against the Rams due to a hamstring injury.
Shanahan also mentioned that All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey returned from Germany, where he received treatment for Achilles tendinitis that had put him on injured reserve two weeks ago.
McCaffrey must sit out at least two more games before he can return to practice, but Shanahan said he expects his rehab to pick up next week.
In addition, two other injuries occurred during Thursday’s practice: safety Talanoa Hufanga rolled his ankle, while linebacker Curtis Robinson tore his ACL. Hufanga will be listed as questionable this week, and Robinson is out for the remainder of the season.
Linebacker Dee Winters (ankle) and defensive lineman Jordan Elliott (foot) are also considered questionable.
