Newcastle set up a fourth-round match against Chelsea in the English League Cup by defeating fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon 1-0 on Tuesday.
Fabian Schar scored a well-taken penalty during first-half stoppage time, giving Newcastle a win that felt more comfortable than the final score showed.
The match was played a week later than originally planned because it had to be rescheduled. It took place at Newcastle’s St. James’ Park after flooding caused major damage to the pitch at Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium.
A crowd of 51,739 attended the rearranged match.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe made eight changes to the lineup that played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League.
Schar was one of the players who stayed in the team and scored the penalty after Wimbledon defender Joe Pigott was deemed to have fouled Miguel Almiron in the box.
