Real Madrid announced on Sunday that they have extended Dani Carvajal’s contract after medical tests indicated he is likely to miss the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury.
The club confirmed that Carvajal’s contract will now run until June 2026, shortly after it was revealed that he has a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament, and a ruptured popliteus tendon in his right leg.
Carvajal is expected to have surgery in the coming days.
He got injured during the second half of Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the Spanish league on Saturday.
He fell in pain after kicking an opponent’s leg and was seen crying as he was taken off the field on a stretcher.
At 32 years old, Carvajal joined Madrid’s youth teams at the age of 10 in 2002. He became part of the senior team in 2013 and has won 26 titles with the club, including six Champions League titles.
Last season, Madrid faced multiple knee ligament injuries, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defenders Éder Militão and David Alaba missing significant time.
Additionally, on Sunday, Madrid reported that forward Vinícius Júnior suffered a cervical injury during the match against Villarreal but did not provide a timeline for his recovery.
