The Kansas City Chiefs have an opportunity to make NFL history, but they also face a significant challenge.
After winning back-to-back Super Bowls, the Chiefs aim to become the first team in the modern era to win three championships in a row. However, even with a perfect 5-0 record, their offense is looking weaker than it has since Patrick Mahomes II became quarterback.
With star receivers Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown both out for the season, the Chiefs need to either explore the trade market for help at that position or settle for a less impressive group of pass-catchers and rely on Mahomes to make it work. Choosing the trade option would be a smart move.
If they are seeking a trade partner, the Chiefs might benefit if the Seattle Seahawks decide to let go of one of their higher-priced players. Nick Villano from FanSided suggested that the Chiefs could make a big move to acquire Seahawks veteran star Tyler Lockett before the trade deadline.
“The Seattle Seahawks have Lockett’s replacement in Jaxson Smith-Njigba. He’s looked better and better each week. Lockett has been decent this season, but the Seahawks could be really good with or without Lockett,” Villano said.
“The Chiefs won’t have to give up everything to make the deal happen, and the Seahawks can maximize the trade with the Chiefs as they aim for a three-peat.”
Lockett, a 10-year veteran, has 8,333 receiving yards and 60 touchdowns in his impressive career. He is a three-time All-Pro, though he hasn’t received that honor since 2017. He also recorded over 1,000 receiving yards each season from 2019 to 2022.
However, there is one thing Lockett is missing: a Super Bowl ring. He was drafted by a Seahawks team that had just made two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, but Seattle hasn’t returned to the big game since.
Acquiring Lockett would be a win-win situation. The Chiefs would get the help they need, Lockett would have a chance to win a championship, and the Seahawks would gain salary relief while giving Smith-Njigba the opportunity to shine.
