Mike McCarthy, who was expected to finish the season coaching through the end of his contract in January, might actually stay with the Dallas Cowboys longer than anticipated.
Owner Jerry Jones confirmed that the Cowboys (4-7) do not plan to fire McCarthy during the season. He also suggested that the team could consider extending McCarthy’s contract instead.
“I don’t think that’s crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach,” Jones said in an interview on 105.3 FM The Fan on Tuesday. “Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left.”
The Cowboys will play their annual Thanksgiving afternoon home game this week, still looking for their first win at AT&T Stadium this season. They are also currently outside the playoff picture with six games remaining.
A win against the New York Giants (2-9) could give the team a boost, especially with a 10-day break before hosting the Cincinnati Bengals on “Monday Night Football” in Week 14.
Jones mentioned that the Cowboys’ message to players this week is a positive one as they try to earn back-to-back wins for the first time since Weeks 4 and 5 when they beat the Giants and Steelers. In their most recent victory, Dallas shocked the Washington Commanders with two fourth-quarter kickoff return touchdowns.
