Veteran defenseman Brent Burns has signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche, the team announced on Wednesday. While the financial details of the deal were not made public, the signing brings a reliable and experienced player to Colorado’s blue line. Burns, now 40 years old, was an unrestricted free agent after completing his tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes.

During the 2023–24 NHL season, Burns played all 82 regular-season games for Carolina, tallying 29 points with six goals and 23 assists. He also contributed five points in 15 playoff games, showing his continued effectiveness despite his age. Impressively, Burns has maintained remarkable durability, having not missed a single game over the past 11 seasons. His active streak of 925 consecutive games played ranks fourth in NHL history.

Veteran Defenseman Brings Experience, Production, and Durability to Strengthen Avalanche Blue Line

Burns was traded to the Hurricanes from the San Jose Sharks in July 2022 and amassed 133 points (34 goals, 99 assists) in 246 regular-season games with Carolina. Last season marked the end of the eight-year, \$64 million contract he signed with San Jose in 2016. His consistent production and experience make him a valuable asset for the Avalanche as they aim for another deep playoff run.

Originally selected 20th overall in the 2003 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild, Burns has built an impressive NHL career. Over 1,497 regular-season games with the Wild, Sharks, and Hurricanes, he has recorded 910 points, including 261 goals and 649 assists. In 135 career playoff games, he has added 80 points. His leadership, skill, and resilience will likely be key contributions to Colorado’s defensive corps.
