Bryce Miller pitched for six innings, allowing two runs, to secure his first victory since April 17. Seattle got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first inning against Houston’s Framber Valdez.
The Mariners relied on their pitching to maintain their early lead. Miller was supported by relievers Trent Thornton, Gabe Speier, and Andrés Muñoz, who closed out the game, with Muñoz earning his 11th save.
Miller, who had lost his previous four decisions, showed improvement, striking out six batters and issuing two walks. After a challenging May, where he allowed 15 earned runs, he seemed to regain some of his earlier form from the beginning of the season.
Despite facing difficulties in the fifth inning, giving up three consecutive singles that resulted in a run, Miller managed to escape further damage. He also through a tight situation in the sixth inning, with two runners on base, before Jon Singleton’s fly out ended the threat.
José Abreu, who was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land before the game, contributed with a crucial single, his first hit since April 27. Abreu had struggled earlier in the season, hitting just .099 before being sent to the minors on May 1.
