Domingo Germán makes a return to baseball as he agrees to a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, which includes an invitation to the big league camp for spring training.

The 31-year-old pitcher had entered treatment for alcohol abuse last summer, leading to his placement on the restricted list by the New York Yankees. A source familiar with Germán’s agreement with the Pirates revealed that the club met with Germán, his wife Mara, and representatives from the Major League Baseball Players Association before extending the contract.

Germán made headlines last season when he pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history during New York’s 11-0 victory over Oakland on June 28. Despite this achievement, he finished the season with a record of 5-7 and a 4.56 ERA in 19 starts and one relief appearance before his placement on the restricted list.

His decision to seek treatment adds to a career marked by controversy, including a 10-game suspension in May for using an illegal substance on the mound and an 81-game ban earlier in his career due to an alleged domestic violence incident.

The terms of Germán’s deal with the Pirates include a $1.25 million salary for the upcoming season, with additional performance bonuses, and a club option for 2025 worth $2.25 million.

Pittsburgh needs pitching reinforcements behind Mitch Keller and recently acquired veterans Martín Pérez and Marco Gonzales. Prospect Paul Skenes, the top overall pick in last year’s amateur draft, is expected to start the season in the minors.

In addition to Germán, the Pirates have secured the services of veteran outfielder Michael A. Taylor on a one-year deal worth $4 million. Taylor, who turns 33 this month, brings experience to the team after playing for Washington, Kansas City, and Minnesota during his career.

While the Pirates have stability in left and center field with Bryan Reynolds and Jack Suwinski, respectively, the situation in right field remains uncertain as they aim to improve upon last season’s record of 76-86.

Pittsburgh is scheduled to kick off the 2024 season on March 28 with a game against the Miami Marlins.
