Alphonso Davies takes the ball forward

Alphonso Davies’ leg injury doesn’t seem serious, and Canada coach Jesse Marsch hasn’t ruled out the possibility of his star player being ready for Saturday’s Copa America third-place match.

Davies had to leave the field in the 71st minute of Tuesday night’s 2-0 loss to Argentina after a fair challenge from Gonzalo Montiel caught his right leg.

Marsch confirmed that Davies’ X-ray results were negative. “It’s too early to say if he’ll be able to play on Saturday night,” Marsch said on Wednesday.

Canada’s opponent on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be either Uruguay or Colombia. Marsch praised the team’s progress but emphasized the need for improvement, particularly in finishing and handling critical moments.

Davies, who plays for Bayern Munich in Germany’s Bundesliga as a left-back and winger, captains the Canadian national team.

While pleased with the team’s performance in his first seven games as coach, Marsch highlighted the issue of missed opportunities, noting 14 “big chances” squandered in the first five tournament matches.

“We have talented players and great goal-scorers, and we will continue to develop,” Marsch said.

“However, creating numerous scoring opportunities and maintaining our style of play is crucial for us to become more effective, efficient, and in control of our games.”
