Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has opened up about a pivotal summer conversation he had with Mikel Arteta, which reaffirmed his commitment to the club.
The Brazilian has played a crucial role in Arsenal’s rise from top-four hopefuls to genuine title contenders this season. However, his place in the team was initially threatened with the arrival of Jurrien Timber at the start of the campaign, with Arteta opting for Ben White and Thomas Partey in defense.
After Timber’s unfortunate injury just two games into the season, Gabriel found himself back in the starting lineup alongside William Saliba. Reflecting on the challenging period, Gabriel revealed that a candid discussion with Arteta during the summer convinced him to stay and fight for his place at the Emirates.
“It was tough at the beginning when I wasn’t playing. But I understood the coach’s decisions,” Gabriel shared with PA news agency.
“Arteta spoke to me, explained his reasons, and emphasized the importance of staying focused and committed. He knew my value to the team, so I’m delighted to be back and contributing in every game.”
As Arsenal gears up to face West Ham, Gabriel’s return to form comes at an opportune moment for the club, especially following their morale-boosting 3-1 victory over Liverpool. Meanwhile, West Ham enters the fixture on the back of a six-game winless streak, including a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United last Sunday.
