Following two setbacks during gameplay, Luton’s Tom Lockyer has come to terms with the idea of retiring and feels content about it

Tom Lockyer, a Premier League player who had an on-field cardiac arrest earlier this season, says he feels calm about the possibility of having to retire from soccer.

Lockyer, the captain of Luton, had a defibrillator implanted after collapsing during a match against Bournemouth in December. He had collapsed previously seven months earlier during a game at Wembley Stadium due to atrial fibrillation.

The 29-year-old Lockyer, who recently became a father, hasn’t given up hope of returning to playing. However, he understands it might not be possible.

“I’ve been open about wanting to get back to soccer, but it depends on a cardiologist or a specialist who has studied what happened and if it could happen again, because we have a little girl now and she comes first,” Lockyer told BBC Radio Wales.

“I’d like to play soccer again, of course, it’s my passion, but if I can’t, then I’m okay with that too.”
