Gary Neville has been challenged by a former teammate regarding his account of how the Stone Roses’ “This Is The One” became the anthem for Manchester United.
Neville recently shared his version of events, claiming a central role in selecting the song as the club’s anthem, a narrative backed by Old Trafford announcer Alan Keegan. However, Brian McClair, another former United player, contested Neville’s version, suggesting that his influence was less significant than portrayed.
In a new Adidas promotion for United, Neville recounted his perspective, expressing his desire for a Manchester-based song and his admiration for the Stone Roses’ impact on the city.
He described the emotional resonance of the song at Old Trafford and its enduring connection to the club.
Contrary to Neville’s account, McClair, who played for United in the late 1980s and 1990s, disputed the story, dismissing it as a product of imagination. He recounted a different scenario where he chose the Stone Roses’ tune after a disagreement with manager Sir Alex Ferguson over the match day anthem.
McClair’s version of events, previously shared on his podcast, highlights the significance he attributes to the decision, labeling it as one of the best accomplishments of his career.
