Hungary secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Scotland at the European Championship on Sunday, dashing Scotland’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time.

Kevin Csoboth, a late substitute, scored his first international goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time, securing Hungary’s third-place finish in Group A behind Germany and Switzerland.

The match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Barnabás Varga in the second half. The Hungarian forward suffered multiple facial fractures and was hospitalized. His participation in the remainder of Euro 2024 is unlikely.

Hungary, now with three points, could advance to the round of 16 as one of the top four third-place teams, a determination that won’t be confirmed until the final group games on Wednesday.

“It was a terrible moment to see Barnabás like that,” said Hungary midfielder Roland Sallai. “We hope for his quick recovery. We fought hard in the remaining minutes, dedicating our victory to him.”

The entire stadium watched in concern as Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Medical staff attended to Varga amidst supportive gestures from both teams’ players and fans. He was stretchered off after a delay of approximately 10 minutes.

In other Group A action, Germany clinched the top spot with a late goal securing a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. Scotland, finishing last with just one point, was eliminated after a difficult tournament debut, including a 5-1 loss to Germany.
