“I cannot guarantee anything regarding next season.” – Manchester United target hesitant to commit to European giants

Manchester United target Joao Neves has refrained from dismissing speculation surrounding his potential departure from Benfica this upcoming summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Red Devils’ interest in Neves back in November, noting that the Premier League giants had sent representatives to scout the young player.

Manchester United scouts reportedly observed Neves, 19, in action for Benfica during their 2-1 victory against Sporting CP on November 12. Notably, he scored a crucial equalizer in the 90+4th minute of that game, showcasing his talent throughout the match.

Despite his focus on Benfica’s current season, Neves has left the door open for a potential move, particularly with Manchester United showing interest. While he expresses his desire to stay at Estadio da Luz for now, he remains cautious about making any definitive statements about his future beyond this season, as shared by Romano:

“Staying at Benfica next year? I can’t promise anything for next season. My wish at the moment is to stay at Benfica and then we will see, you never know.”

With the support of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team, Erik ten Hag is expected to make significant changes to Manchester United’s roster in the upcoming transfer window.

Neves, regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young talents, has garnered praise for his performances in the Primeira Liga with Benfica, amassing 35 appearances across competitions and contributing two goals and two assists.

Renowned for his ball control and attacking prowess, the Portugal international has caught the attention of Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes, who has advocated for the club to pursue the “top quality” teenage defensive midfielder.

Neves currently has four years remaining on his contract, with a reported release clause of €120 million (£105 million).
