Kobbie Mainoo’s journey to becoming a central midfielder for Manchester United was a path that saw him experience various positions on the field before settling into his current role.

The 18-year-old has become a vital player for Manchester United this season, showcasing his talent and maturity with 17 appearances across all competitions and two crucial goals, one of which was a match-winner against Wolves.

Despite his current success in central midfield, Mainoo revealed that he started his football journey as a striker before transitioning to roles as a No.10 and a winger.

“Not many people know that I used to be a striker,” he said. “When I was younger I was always a striker, and then No.10 and on the wing. It’s only more recently that I’ve come into the proper centre-midfield role.”

This shift proved fruitful for Mainoo, who has thrived in his new position, earning praise for his commanding presence and consistent performances. In an interview, he attributed much of his progress to the guidance and encouragement from manager Erik ten Hag.

“He just wanted me to be more dominant and just demand the ball all the time. And when I first came up with the first team, he told me he was going to push me, and he did,” Mainoo explained.

“He just always demanded more from me and just being involved in every play and just always getting on the ball. He’s been so helpful. And then always guiding me, as well as the senior players.”

Mainoo’s dedication to improvement and adaptability have been key factors in his rise, with his impactful performances reflecting the effectiveness of his transition to central midfield.
