Luca Gotti, former Chelsea assistant coach, has been appointed as the new head coach of Lecce following the dismissal of Roberto D’Aversa, who was let go after an incident where he appeared to headbutt an opposing player.
Gotti, previously in charge at Udinese and Spezia, has been handed a contract until the end of the season, with the possibility of an extension should the club avoid relegation.
The decision to part ways with D’Aversa came after an altercation during Lecce’s recent match against Hellas Verona. D’Aversa intervened in a dispute between Verona’s Thomas Henry and Lecce’s Marin Pongracic, inadvertently making contact with Henry in a manner that led to his dismissal and subsequent ban from coaching for four matches.
Despite a promising start to the season, where Lecce remained unbeaten for the first five matches, the team currently sits just above the relegation zone. Gotti’s first match in charge will be against Salernitana, the team at the bottom of the standings, on Saturday.
With Sarri’s departure from Lazio also confirmed, there have been a total of 11 coaching changes in Serie A this season, underscoring the volatility in the league.
