The decision by football’s lawmakers IFAB to introduce blue cards marks a significant change in refereeing protocol, with the traditional yellow and red cards being joined by this new addition.
Blue cards will be utilized to penalize players for cynical fouls aimed at halting promising attacks or for dissent toward match officials, requiring the offending player to spend 10 minutes in a sin-bin, similar to rugby.
While the FA Cup has been identified as a potential testing ground for this new system, lower-tier competitions are expected to be the initial focus before a potential global rollout if successful.
