Caoimhin Kelleher

Jürgen Klopp has praised Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for his stellar performance in the 4-1 victory over Brentford. With Alisson Becker sidelined due to a suspected hamstring issue, Kelleher stepped up admirably to fill in for the Brazilian at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, February 17.

Having demonstrated his reliability as a deputy for Alisson over the past few years, Kelleher has earned Klopp’s trust, particularly in cup competitions. This marked the second consecutive Premier League game where Kelleher was handed the starting role in Alisson’s absence.

Following his crucial role in securing a 3-1 win against Burnley the previous week, Kelleher delivered another impressive performance against Brentford.

Despite being unable to keep a clean sheet, Kelleher made several key saves, including a remarkable stop from Serge Regulion before Ivan Toney capitalized on the rebound. Klopp lauded Kelleher’s performance, describing it as ‘A+.’

Speaking after the match, Klopp emphasized Kelleher’s importance to the team and acknowledged his outstanding abilities:

“Caoimhin had already enough games this year to have kind of rhythm…He was outstanding…If they have a better goalkeeper than him I have to say, ‘Respect.’ He’s outstanding…He’s exceptional. Today he was…wow! It was an A+ performance.”

Having emerged from Liverpool’s youth ranks, Kelleher has amassed 35 senior appearances for the club, primarily featuring in cup matches while occasionally deputizing for Alisson.

Despite his status as a backup, Klopp has hailed Kelleher as the ‘best No. 2 goalie in the world,’ a testament to his talent and contributions to the team.
