United States’ Gio Reyna walks to the stage during the trophy presentation after a CONCACAF Nations League final soccer match

Winger Gio Reyna will be absent from the U.S. friendlies against Canada and New Zealand due to a strained left groin and was replaced on the roster on Thursday by Cade Cowell.

This injury adds to Reyna’s recent struggles; he played only 280 league minutes for Borussia Dortmund in the first half of last season and 235 minutes for Nottingham Forest after a loan move on January 31.

He has also played just 10 minutes in Dortmund’s first two Bundesliga games this season.

Reyna, 21, has scored eight goals in 31 international matches. He is the son of former U.S. captain Claudio Reyna.

Cowell, 20, is with the Mexican club Chivas and has one goal in eight international appearances.

The U.S. will play against Canada on Saturday in Kansas City and then face New Zealand on Tuesday in Cincinnati.
