Switzerland forward Xherdan Shaqiri retired from the national team on Monday.
Shaqiri made the announcement nine days after playing his 125th game for Switzerland, which ended in a penalty shootout loss to England in the European Championship quarterfinals.
Coming on as a substitute during extra time, the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich player hit the England crossbar directly from a corner in the 1-1 draw before scoring in the shootout.
At 32 years old, Shaqiri started one out of five games in Euro 2024 and scored one of the standout goals of the tournament against Scotland.
He has participated in seven major tournaments since his debut at the 2010 World Cup as an 18-year-old, where he did not score.
“It’s time for me to bid farewell to the national team. Thank you,” he wrote in a social media post.
Shaqiri’s 125 appearances for Switzerland rank second only to his longtime teammate and captain Granit Xhaka, who has 130 caps. Shaqiri has scored 32 goals, including five each at the World Cup and European Championships.
He will continue his career at the Chicago Fire, where he has been playing since 2022.
