North Korea’s planned home match against Japan in the World Cup qualifiers was canceled unexpectedly, as announced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The decision came after North Korea expressed its inability to host the game in Pyongyang, without giving a reason. Discussions with FIFA led to this outcome, and further updates on the matter will come from relevant FIFA committees.
The match was initially set to happen in North Korea, marking a rare international football event there. This move follows North Korea’s decision last month to relocate a playoff match against Japan’s women’s team to neutral ground in Saudi Arabia.
Reports suggest North Korea was concerned about potential health risks in Japan. Japanese officials mentioned being approached during halftime of a previous match, with North Korea proposing to hold the game in Japan instead.
However, due to the suddenness of the request, Japan needs more time to decide. Additionally, Japan’s foreign ministry advised against traveling to North Korea for the match due to strained relations between the two countries.
Despite its challenges, North Korea participated in the 2010 World Cup but didn’t advance past the group stage. Its most memorable World Cup moment was in 1966 when it defeated Italy.
