The soccer world is currently engaged in the search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool, following Klopp’s surprising announcement that he will step down at the end of the season. Among the names circulating as a potential replacement is Xabi Alonso, an iconic figure at Liverpool and the current coach of Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite Alonso’s impressive record of 41 wins in 64 games with Leverkusen, there are doubts about whether he can truly match Klopp’s legendary legacy at Anfield, according to former Liverpool player and Alonso’s ex-teammate, Luis Garcia.

Garcia believes that, for the time being, Alonso should remain focused on his role at Bayer Leverkusen, indicating that rushing into a managerial position at Liverpool might not be the best course of action.

During a discussion on CBS Sports Golazo’s ‘Morning Footy’ show, Garcia expressed his reservations about immediately following Klopp, emphasizing the significant challenge of living up to the immense legacy left by the German manager.

He highlighted the importance of a transition period, suggesting that Alonso could benefit from allowing himself time to adjust to the expectations and pressures associated with managing a club of Liverpool’s stature.

While Garcia acknowledged Alonso’s capabilities, he stressed the difficulty of stepping into Klopp’s shoes without a proper transition.

Garcia expressed his satisfaction with Alonso’s current tenure at Leverkusen and pointed out that Alonso’s contract with the German club extends until 2026. Despite this, Garcia hopes that Alonso will eventually return to Anfield with enhanced experience and confidence.

When asked to choose between Xabi Alonso and another Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, as Klopp’s potential successor, Garcia opted for Gerrard. Garcia believes that Gerrard’s personality aligns well with Liverpool’s current style of play.

However, with Gerrard currently fulfilling contractual obligations in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq, the quest for Klopp’s replacement continues.

Garcia emphasized the enormity of the task of replacing Klopp, who achieved remarkable success with Liverpool, guiding the team to European triumphs and securing the EPL title after a 30-year wait.

Klopp’s decision to step down comes after a historic run, and Garcia acknowledged that matching such a legacy is no easy feat. Klopp’s departure marks the end of an era for Liverpool, prompting the club to carefully consider its next managerial move.
