The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk from the Miami Marlins on Thursday, indicating that the D-backs are preparing to be active as the trade deadline approaches.

The 29-year-old Puk is expected to be helpful in the later innings of the D-backs’ bullpen. He has been a reliable reliever for the past three seasons and has a 4-8 record with a 4.30 ERA in 32 appearances this year.

The Diamondbacks, who are the defending National League champions, have shown improvement this season after a slow start and currently have a 53-50 record.

In exchange, the Marlins received minor league third baseman Deyvison De Los Santos and outfielder Andrew Pintar.

The 21-year-old De Los Santos is batting .325 with 28 home runs and 84 RBIs while playing in Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Puk is under team control through the 2026 season, which is why the D-backs were willing to trade De Los Santos, who has been an impressive hitter throughout his minor-league career.

The MLB trade deadline is Tuesday.
