The Detroit Tigers placed shortstop Javier Báez on the 10-day injured list on Friday due to inflammation in his right hip and lumbar spine.

Manager A.J. Hinch said they will have more information after Báez undergoes additional tests.

Báez, who returned to Wrigley Field on Tuesday, was a key player for the Cubs’ 2016 World Series team. He batted .375 in the NLDS and was named co-MVP of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping the Cubs win their first championship in 108 years.

He was an NL All-Star in 2018 and 2019 but has struggled since he signed a $140 million, six-year deal with Detroit in December 2021.

“Javy came into my office after the game and talked about ongoing issues with his hip and back, so we sent him for tests. The initial test showed he needs to go on the injured list. He’ll have more tests tomorrow to determine the full extent and duration,” Hinch said.

Báez is hitting .184 this season with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 80 games.

To fill his spot, the Tigers recalled infielder Ryan Kreidler from Triple-A Toledo. Kreidler has played 21 games with the Tigers this season, with six hits in 44 at-bats.
