Brenton Doyle hit his first career grand slam in a game where Colorado smashed a total of four home runs, matching their highest-ever score in a 20-7 win against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.
Ezequiel Tovar, who hit a home run in the first inning, extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two singles. Jacob Stallings and Brendan Rodgers also hit home runs, while Kris Bryant had three singles.
Cal Quantrill (7-7) pitched well for six innings as Colorado won two out of three games against the struggling Red Sox. Boston has lost five of their last six games since the All-Star break.
The Red Sox used four relief pitchers over seven innings, and Dominic Smith, an infielder, pitched the eighth inning cleanly with just eight pitches.
After the game, Boston announced that manager Alex Cora agreed to a contract extension until the end of the 2027 season.
“I’m just glad we got a deal done and everybody can concentrate on what really matters,” Cora said.
Boston made a season-high four errors, which led to six runs that were not earned. Three of these errors happened while Nick Pivetta was pitching. Pivetta (4-7), who had struggled against the Rockies in previous starts, allowed eight runs (seven earned) in 2 2/3 innings.
“I didn’t have my best stuff,” Pivetta said. “Breaking pitches weren’t breaking the way I needed them too and they were ready to hit.”
There was a bit of tension in the fourth inning when Reese McGuire and Quantrill exchanged words. McGuire was unhappy when Quantrill celebrated after McGuire flew out to end the inning, leading to a brief confrontation that required players to be separated.
