Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May underwent surgery on his esophagus and will not play again this season, adding to the challenges faced by him and the team’s pitching staff.
May required the surgery to repair a tear after experiencing discomfort following a meal earlier in the week, confirmed by the Dodgers on Sunday.
The Dodgers are dealing with a shortage of pitchers due to injuries to Clayton Kershaw, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and Walker Buehler.
May, 26, had been progressing towards a potential return after his second elbow surgery nearly a year ago. He had a record of 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA in nine starts this season. His 2021 season ended early due to his first elbow surgery.
In his five-year career with the Dodgers, May has a record of 12-9 and an ERA of 3.10 in 46 games, including 34 starts. The Dodgers were hopeful he would strengthen their pitching staff later in the season.
Kershaw moved closer to returning on Saturday with a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Oklahoma City. The three-time Cy Young Award winner pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only one walk and striking out five in a 38-pitch performance.
