Dan Iassogna, Alfonso Márquez, Bill Miller, and Alan Porter will lead the umpire teams for this week’s Wild Card Series in baseball, with Iassogna and Porter returning to their roles for a second year in a row.
All crew chiefs will be positioned at third base for the opening games and will not serve as the home plate umpire during this round, according to Major League Baseball’s announcement on Tuesday.
Márquez will oversee the series between the Detroit Tigers and the Houston Astros, with Tony Randazzo as the home plate umpire, Jordan Baker at first base, Will Little at second, Jeremie Rehak in left field, and Junior Valentine in right field.
Umpires will rotate from right field to left field and then clockwise around the bases starting at third base. This means an umpire who is at second base for the first game will be behind the plate for a possible third game in the best-of-three Wild Card Series.
Miller will be in charge of the Kansas City Royals’ series against the Baltimore Orioles, with Ryan Additon as the home plate umpire, Ben May at first, Nic Lentz at second, David Rackley in left, and Malachi Moore in right.
Porter will officiate the New York Mets’ series against the Milwaukee Brewers, with Alex Tosi behind the plate, Chris Segal at first, Vic Carapazza at second, Mike Estabrook in left, and Brennan Miller in right.
Iassogna will handle the series between the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres, with Nestor Ceja as the home plate umpire, Phil Cuzzi at first, Jansen Visconti at second, Mark Wegner in left, and Erich Bacchus in right.
Bruce Dreckman, Manny Gonzalez, D.J. Reyburn, and Stu Scheurwater will serve as replay umpires at the video center in the commissioner’s office.
Bacchus, Miller, Moore, and Valentine will be making their postseason on-field debuts, while Miller and Valentine worked as replay umpires last year.
