Connor Norby hit a home run, double, and single, leading the Miami Marlins to a 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and ending a five-game losing streak.
Jesús Sánchez also homered, and Jonah Bride had two hits for the Marlins, who started the day with the worst record in the NL at 46-83.
Norby, who was traded from the Baltimore Orioles on July 30 and recently called up from Triple-A, has had extra-base hits in all six games since his promotion.
“I’m just trying to keep it simple now, stick to my plan and approach,” Norby said. “Trust my work that I put in. Try to play team baseball. The more you focus on the team, I think it takes pressure off you individually.”
Marlins pitcher Adam Oller gave up one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. Oller (1-1) retired 11 batters in a row before walking Cody Bellinger in the sixth. Oller walked two and struck out six.
“It’s just a focus on getting ahead and attacking the zone,” Oller said. “First two innings I was trying to be a little too fine with certain things, which ran the pitch count up. The next three had to be a little quicker and it worked.”
Javier Assad (6-4) held Miami to three runs and six hits in a season-high seven innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Marlins scored four runs in the eighth inning against reliever Julian Merryweather. Bride had an RBI single, and Otto López and Kyle Stowers each hit run-scoring doubles. Derek Hill added an RBI single.
Chicago prevented another run when Sánchez, who was intentionally walked to load the bases, failed to touch first base. The Cubs successfully appealed when Merryweather threw to first baseman Michael Busch.
