Cade Povich struck out 10 batters and pitched into the eighth inning, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-0 win over the White Sox on Tuesday night, which handed Chicago its 12th straight loss.
The White Sox fell to a record of 31-109 and became the first team since 1900 to have at least three losing streaks of 12 games in one season, according to Sportradar. The 1889 Louisville Colonels and 1899 Cleveland Spiders also had such records.
Chicago was shut out for the 16th time this season, is 11 losses away from tying the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses since 1900, and is on track to end with a 36-126 record.
Grady Sizemore, the interim manager for the White Sox, was ejected for the first time since taking over. In the top of the sixth inning, after his pitchers had walked nine batters, Sizemore was thrown out after a called strike to Andrew Benintendi seemed high.
Benintendi was also ejected after arguing a strikeout call that looked a bit outside the strike zone, and plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt threw him out as well.
The White Sox struggled offensively against Povich (2-7) and had a poor performance from Nick Nastrini (0-7). The Chicago right-hander gave up four hits and six walks in 1 2/3 innings, with only four of the seven runs he allowed being earned.
Povich, a rookie making his 12th start, gave up five hits and did not walk any batters in a career-high 7 1/3 innings. He had not previously struck out more than six batters in a game.
“Very comfortable,” Povich said. “I mean, offense gets out to a huge lead and it just lets me kind of relax, go back to the game plan, really focus on what I need to do. And just continue to have their back like they had mine.”
With this win, Baltimore reclaimed the AL East lead, moving a half-game ahead of the Yankees, who lost 7-4 to Texas after blowing a ninth-inning lead.
