For the first time in 24 years, on Saturday, the New York Mets and New York Yankees both won a playoff game on the same day.
Brandon Nimmo and the Mets staged another late comeback, scoring five runs in the eighth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies to win 6-2 in the first game of their National League Division Series.
About 2 1/2 hours later, the Yankees secured a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the Bronx, thanks to a key hit and an impressive catch from struggling left fielder Alex Verdugo in Game 1 of their American League Division Series.
Previously, the Mets and Yankees had both won postseason games on the same day five times, all in 1999 and 2000.
The last occurrence was on October 11, 2000, when the Yankees evened the AL Championship Series with a 7-1 win against the Seattle Mariners at home and the Mets defeated the Cardinals 6-2 in St. Louis to start their NL Championship Series.
The two teams eventually faced each other in the World Series that month, marking the only time they have met in the championship, with the Yankees defeating the Mets in five games for their third consecutive title and fourth in five years.
That Subway Series was the first in New York City since 1956, when Don Larsen pitched a perfect game to lead the Yankees to victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
This season, the wild-card Mets and AL East champion Yankees have the two largest payrolls in baseball, each exceeding $300 million.
