The Philadelphia Phillies have let go of utility player Whit Merrifield and brought back Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced these changes before Friday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics. The Phillies still owe Merrifield $3,010,753 of his $7 million salary and a $1 million buyout for his 2025 team option.

Merrifield, who is 35 years old, played in 53 games for the Phillies this season, starting 20 times in left field, 12 times at second base, and eight times at third base. He hit .199 with 11 RBIs and scored 21 runs in 174 plate appearances.

The Phillies signed Merrifield as a free agent on February 19.

Wilson is returning to the Phillies for the second time this season. The 29-year-old made his season debut on June 9 against the New York Mets in London. He has batted .315 with 10 home runs and 20 RBIs in 20 games with the IronPigs since being sent down.

Wilson joined the Phillies as a free agent in January 2023.
