José Berríos, despite not feeling well himself, pitched seven innings and allowed only three hits, but two of them were home runs by Adley Rutschman.
The Blue Jays were behind 2-1 in the eighth inning when Daulton Varsho hit a home run to tie the game. Varsho’s ground ball brought home the deciding run in the 10th inning. Varsho joked about being free from illness and hoped it would stay that way.
Berríos mentioned that starting pitchers Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt were available in case of an emergency. However, Toronto managed to get through the game with Berríos and relief pitchers Yimi García and Jordan Romano.
Although the Blue Jays struggled against the Orioles last year, this win puts them in last place, 7 1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Baltimore. However, as Schneider pointed out, it’s still mid-May, leaving plenty of time for Toronto to make a comeback.
