Jake Meyers smashed a three-run homer during Houston’s explosive six-run fourth inning, which supported Justin Verlander’s winning performance as the Astros triumphed over the Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Friday night.
Verlander, with 3,377 strikeouts to his name, struck out nine batters across six innings, surpassing Hall of Famer Greg Maddux (3,371) to claim the 10th spot on the all-time career strikeouts list. He conceded two runs, one of them earned, on eight hits while maintaining his no-walk streak for a second consecutive start and the seventh time this year.
Reflecting on the milestone, Verlander expressed mixed emotions. He acknowledged the sacrifices and dedication required to achieve such feats in baseball and contemplated his journey in the sport.

In addition to Meyers’ homer, Yordan Alvarez contributed an RBI double, while Josh Hader secured the win with his seventh save for the Astros, who kicked off a seven-game road trip.
Houston’s offensive surge began in the fourth inning after Ross Stripling retired the first nine batters. Jose Altuve initiated a string of four consecutive hits, followed by Alex Bregman’s two-run single.
