Alex Albon, a Formula One driver, has put an end to rumors about his future by extending his contract with Williams for several years. This move, according to team principal James Vowles, shows a strong belief in the team’s ongoing efforts to rebuild itself.
The announcement on Wednesday comes after speculations that Albon might join Mercedes or return to Red Bull, following Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Ferrari. Albon was already under contract with Williams until 2025.
The new agreement will keep Albon with Williams as Formula 1 enters a new era of regulations starting in 2026, although specific details were not disclosed.
Albon expressed his hope that signing the new contract would contribute to the team’s revitalization efforts under Vowles’ leadership.
Since joining in January 2023, Vowles has been working to modernize Williams, a team that was dominant in F1 during the 1980s and 1990s but hasn’t won a race since 2012.
Supported by Dorilton Capital, a U.S.-based investment firm that acquired the team from the Williams family in 2020, Vowles has been focused on modernizing outdated processes and technology that had caused costly delays in car design.
The 28-year-old Albon is currently in his third season with Williams. Although he hasn’t scored any points this year, he has consistently outperformed his teammate, Logan Sargeant.
“It’s been a tough start to the year, but since joining Williams, we’ve made significant progress together, and I’ve witnessed the major changes happening behind the scenes to bring us back to the front of the grid,” Albon stated.
Albon entered Formula One in 2019 with Red Bull’s junior team, Toro Rosso, but was released by Red Bull in 2020. Last season, Albon scored 27 points compared to Sargeant’s one, helping Williams secure seventh place in the constructors’ championship, the team’s best result in six years.
