Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is reportedly “re-evaluating” his 2025-26 season and considering sitting out entirely as he recovers from the Achilles injury he suffered last May. While many expected Tatum to return at some point this season, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Wednesday night that the Celtics forward has doubts about how he would reintegrate into a team that has exceeded expectations in his absence.

Tatum spoke candidly about his thoughts on returning during a recent episode of The Pivot podcast, acknowledging the Celtics’ success and identity this season. “Second team in the East up to this point. So there is a thought in my head of like, how does that work?” Tatum said, reflecting on how his presence could impact the chemistry of the team. He also told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne that no decision has been made regarding his return.

Mazzulla Confident Tatum’s Progress and Return Will Positively Impact Celtics Team Chemistry

Head coach Joe Mazzulla addressed Tatum’s situation during an interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak & Bertrand show. Mazzulla emphasized that Tatum’s mindset has been consistent throughout the season and that the team is prioritizing his recovery. “It was never a yes, it was never a no. It was, ‘Let’s work as hard as you can, trusting the sports science team, trusting his development… and then reevaluate it,’” Mazzulla said.

From a physical standpoint, Mazzulla reported that Tatum is “progressing naturally” with no setbacks in his rehab. Regarding concerns about disrupting the current team chemistry, the coach viewed Tatum’s potential return as a positive influence. “I look at disruption as a positive,” Mazzulla said. “He’ll come back and just make us better… He should never be worried about disrupting in a negative way because he’ll just make us better on both ends of the floor and already add to what we’ve been able to build here this season.”

Tatum’s Return Could Strengthen Celtics, Pending Health, Mental Readiness, and Team Integration

The Celtics, currently tied with the New York Knicks for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference at 29-18, would benefit significantly if Tatum were to return. His presence could transform Boston from a strong playoff team into a legitimate championship contender.

Mazzulla acknowledged that it is natural for Tatum to have doubts and second-guess himself after suffering the first major injury of his NBA career. However, the coach stressed that if Tatum is healthy, there is no reason he cannot contribute meaningfully this season. The door remains open for the star forward, with both his physical readiness and mental comfort guiding the decision.

In short, while Tatum is seriously considering sitting out the season, his rehab is progressing well, and the Celtics remain optimistic about his eventual return. Any decision will weigh both his health and the timing of reintegration into a team that has thrived in his absence.
