Geno Smith is returning to the New York Jets after being traded by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo, and Tom Pelissero. The Raiders will send Smith, along with a 2026 seventh-round pick, to the Jets in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round selection, moving up from No. 228 to No. 208 in the upcoming draft. Las Vegas will cover most of Smith’s salary, leaving the Jets responsible for just over the league minimum.
Smith, a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, called the move a “complete full circle moment” and expressed excitement about reconnecting with teammates, coaches, and the fan base. The trade cannot officially be completed until the new league year begins on Wednesday.

Raiders Move On from Smith While Jets Gain Experienced Quarterback and Leadership Option
The Raiders decided to part ways with Smith after a difficult 2025 season in which he was sacked 55 times, threw 17 interceptions, and contributed to Las Vegas’ 3-14 record under coach Pete Carroll. Smith had signed a two-year, $75 million extension in April, but the partnership did not produce results. With the team expected to draft Indiana quarterback and 2025 Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza with the first pick in the 2026 draft, the Raiders no longer required Smith.
For the Jets, Smith offers a chance to compete for a starting role under coach Aaron Glenn. Although New York has struggled with quarterbacks in recent seasons, including Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor, Smith’s experience provides leadership and guidance. He will have talented targets like Garrett Wilson and tight end Mason Taylor to help revitalize his career.
Las Vegas moves on from a well-intentioned but unsuccessful partnership with Smith, while he returns to familiar territory with the opportunity to rebuild his career and make an impact in New York.
