Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that linebacker Micah Parsons will be available for the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4. The coach avoided specifics about their recent meeting, following Parsons’ unusual preseason behavior of not wearing his jersey and lying on a medical table.

Parsons Expected to Play Limited Snaps Amid Holdout and Gradual Season Ramp-Up

While Parsons will play, Schottenheimer acknowledged that he may be limited in his snaps. The coach indicated that Parsons is unlikely to play every play immediately but will still be able to make a disruptive impact. A gradual ramp-up plan is expected to ease him back into full game action.

Parsons has missed all summer practices due to a holdout over a contract extension, which has not progressed. Unlike other recent holdouts in the league, Parsons will likely play this season under the $21.324 million fifth-year option of his rookie deal, with no new agreement in place.

Parsons Cleared for Practice and Game Reps Will Be Key for Early Season

Parsons recently underwent an MRI on his back, which came back clean, and he is medically cleared to practice. League rules require a three-day break before resuming team drills, and the Cowboys plan three practice sessions before flying to Philadelphia for the opener.

Schottenheimer emphasized that while walk-throughs and sideline involvement help, the best way for Parsons to improve is by playing. His presence in team activities has been beneficial, but actual game reps will be key to maximizing his performance early in the season.
