The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded wide receiver Christian Kirk to the Houston Texans for a 2026 seventh-round pick originally owned by the Los Angeles Rams. This move comes after initial reports suggested that the Jaguars planned to release Kirk when the new league year begins.
Instead, they secured a trade with a division rival, keeping Kirk in the AFC South. The decision surprised many, including Jaguars’ defensive end, Josh Hines-Allen, who reacted in disbelief on social media.
Texans Strengthen Receiving Corps Amid Injuries and Uncertainty at Wide Receiver
Houston’s decision to acquire Kirk aligns with head coach DeMeco Ryans’ emphasis on improving the wide receiver position. The Texans struggled with injuries to key receivers during their 2024 playoff run, with only Nico Collins available after Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell suffered season-ending knee injuries.

Ryans admitted that the lack of depth at wide receiver hindered the team’s ability to move the ball effectively, making the addition of Kirk a necessary reinforcement.
The Texans still face uncertainty at wide receiver despite adding Kirk. Stefon Diggs is set to enter free agency, while Tank Dell’s status for the 2025 season remains unclear following a second surgery to repair a torn ACL. With these concerns, Kirk provides a reliable veteran presence for quarterback C.J. Stroud. His ability to contribute immediately could be crucial as Houston looks to maintain its offensive firepower.
Kirk Aims for Redemption and Key Role in Texans’ Offense
Kirk is entering the final year of his four-year, $72 million contract, carrying a $24.4 million cap hit in 2025. While he had a strong first season in Jacksonville—posting career highs in receptions (84), yards (1,108), and touchdowns (eight)—injuries have slowed his production.
Over the past two seasons, he missed 14 games due to an abdominal injury and a broken collarbone, managing just 84 catches for 1,166 yards and four touchdowns in that span.
Before joining the Jaguars, Kirk played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he recorded 236 receptions, 2,902 yards, and 17 touchdowns. Now at 28, he looks to reestablish himself as a key target in Houston’s offense. With C.J. Stroud emerging as a star quarterback, Kirk has an opportunity to play a pivotal role in the Texans’ passing attack, helping the team remain competitive in the AFC.
