Victor Wembanyama keeps his focus on long-term goals as Spurs take on Nets

Victor Wembanyama had an impressive game against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, scoring 42 points and grabbing 18 rebounds, but his performance wasn’t enough for the San Antonio Spurs to secure a win.

Despite his efforts, the Spurs lost in his first-ever Christmas Day game. Now, Wembanyama and the Spurs will look to bounce back and avoid a third straight defeat when they play the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night in New York.

The Spurs are well-rested after their early game on Wednesday and hope not to waste another strong performance from their star player. Wembanyama made 16 of 31 shots, including six of 16 from three-point range in his fourth career 40-point game.

Despite his big numbers, San Antonio lost another close game after a five-point defeat to the 76ers on Monday, where Wembanyama also scored 26 points.

After the loss on Christmas Day, Wembanyama reflected, saying, “I’m thinking about the game right now, and just thinking that we were close but we lack some attributes at times.” One of the Spurs’ struggles was their performance on the boards.

They allowed 17 offensive rebounds, which was the fourth time this season they’ve given up that many. Despite shooting over 50% from the field, San Antonio still lost. Wembanyama noted, “This is how I see it, because it’s high effort to play like that but it’s also high rewards.”

New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets

In his two previous games against the Nets, Wembanyama has had solid performances. On March 17, he scored 33 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against Brooklyn, and he scored 21 points on Feb. 10 at their arena. He will now face a struggling Nets team, who have lost eight of their last 11 games.

Despite their rough patch, the Nets are coming off a strong win on Thursday, where they beat the Milwaukee Bucks 111-105. Brooklyn made a big comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bucks 35-23.

Cameron Johnson played a key role, scoring 10 of his 29 points in the final period, while Shake Milton added 14 of his 20 points in the fourth. Brooklyn shot 57.9% in that period to overcome a nine-point deficit.

Johnson, who has been playing well recently, is averaging 23.4 points over his past nine games, including a 33-point game at Toronto on Dec. 19. The Nets are also hoping to get some players back soon.

Dorian Finney-Smith, who has missed several games due to a bruised left calf, could return on Friday, and Ben Simmons may be available for the first time on both ends of a back-to-back after playing 29 minutes in Milwaukee.

Knicks continue December surge, set to face Magic next

The New York Knicks are looking to keep their strong December performance going when they play the Orlando Magic to kick off a three-game road trip on Friday night.

The Knicks have been in great form, winning 15 of their last 19 games, including nine of their last 11 in December.

New York has already beaten Orlando twice this month, first with a 121-106 win on December 3 in New York, where Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points and 15 rebounds. The Knicks then won 100-91 in Orlando on December 15, with Towns posting 22 points and 22 rebounds.

Mikal Bridges had a career-high 41 points in the Knicks’ 117-114 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Christmas Day. He made 17 of 25 shots and 6 of 9 from three-point range.

“We just look at each other and see if we’re getting better or not. I think that’s the biggest thing,” Bridges said, according to the New York Post. “I think we took a jump this month. Every day we just keep trying to get better. We want to win. That’s the main goal. But sometimes just getting better is what we’re looking for.”

Bridges has averaged 22.7 points per game this month while shooting 57.7 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from three. He was averaging just 15.5 points before December.

Mikal Bridges and Trae Young in the 1st half

“Slow and steady wins the race, and that’s what he’s been,” said Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau of Bridges. “If you look at his whole career, he just keeps getting better and better. He does everything. He can run the floor, move without the ball, and create advantages. He’s smart and does so many things that help our team.”

While New York is on the rise, Orlando is facing struggles. The Magic blew a 17-point lead on Thursday night and lost 89-88 to the Miami Heat, marking their fourth loss in the last six games.

Jalen Suggs, who led the team with 29 points, missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer. Orlando struggled from three-point range, hitting just 5 of 29 attempts.

Rookie Tristan da Silva has been stepping up in the absence of small forward Franz Wagner, who is out with an oblique injury. Da Silva scored 18 points in back-to-back games.

“Suggs said of da Silva, “He’s had to step up with some bodies going down with different roles and different possessions. He is taking everything head held high, with the utmost confidence and staying even-keeled throughout mistakes, good games and bad games. He’s a rookie but he’s still 23.”

Report: Luka Doncic (calf) sidelined for at least a month

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic will be re-evaluated in a month after suffering a left calf strain, ESPN reported late Thursday night.

The five-time All-Star hurt his calf during a 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. After straining it on what seemed like a minor play in the second quarter, Doncic went to the locker room and did not return for the second half.

Doncic had an MRI on Thursday and consulted with several experts about the injury.

Before leaving the game, the 25-year-old from Slovenia had 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 16 minutes. ESPN reported that Doncic needed crutches to leave the arena.

Luka Doncic (NBA)

The Mavericks will play again on Friday against the Phoenix Suns to start a four-game road trip. They will then face the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday and finish the year with a game against the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

In 22 games this season, all of which he started, Doncic has averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists. He is shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from three-point range.

Doncic has dealt with injuries throughout the season, missing two consecutive games last week and five in a row in late November. He has missed a total of eight games so far.

With the loss on Wednesday, Dallas dropped to 19-11.

Jaden Ivey’s clutch four-point play lifts Pistons over Kings

Jaden Ivey hit a 3-pointer while being fouled with 3.1 seconds left and made the free throw to give the Detroit Pistons a 114-113 win over the struggling Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

The Pistons, who had been down by 10 points with 2:41 left, had the ball after Kevin Huerter made two free throws to put Sacramento up by three points at 113-110 with 10.8 seconds to go.

After a timeout, Ivey received the ball and made a 23-foot shot while getting fouled by De’Aaron Fox. The referee confirmed the foul, and Ivey made the free throw to give Detroit the lead.

The Kings had no timeout left, and Fox’s 50-foot attempt missed as time expired.

This win marked Detroit’s third straight victory as they continue their four-game West Coast road trip, which ends Saturday in Denver. Sacramento lost its fifth consecutive game, all at home.

A 3-pointer from Fox seemed to give Sacramento control at 107-97 with 3:36 left, but the Pistons responded with two 3-pointers from Malik Beasley and a layup by Cade Cunningham, cutting the lead to two points with 1:28 remaining.

Mavericks begin road trip in Phoenix without Luka Doncic

The Dallas Mavericks have not yet revealed how long star guard Luka Doncic will be out after injuring his left calf on Christmas Day.

What is certain is that Doncic will not play when the Mavericks start their four-game road trip against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Doncic hurt his calf during the second quarter of a 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was expected to have an MRI exam on Thursday.

Some reports suggest that Doncic could be sidelined for an extended period, and the Mavericks are preparing to play without their top player.

“It’s an opportunity for one (or more) of us to step up,” said Dallas guard Klay Thompson. “It can be done. He’s obviously our best player, but we got to be tested, and this is a good test ahead.”

Doncic has missed eight games this season, and the Mavericks have done well without him, with a 6-2 record in those games. One of those wins came against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road, where P.J. Washington had season highs of 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Dallas coach Jason Kidd is confident the team can continue to perform at a high level. The loss to the Timberwolves was just the Mavericks’ fourth in the past 18 games.

“I think this is a group that can win, and they believe that,” Kidd said. “But we also need him.”

That “him” is Doncic, who is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 22 games this season. Last year, the 25-year-old finished third in MVP voting, marking his third top-five finish in the last five seasons.

Doncic scored 14 points in 16 minutes before leaving the game against the Timberwolves. Dallas trailed by as many as 28 points before making a strong comeback that fell short.

Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks

Kyrie Irving led the Mavericks with 39 points, his second-best performance of the season.

Mavericks center Dereck Lively II (left hip) is questionable for Friday’s game. He had six points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes against the Timberwolves.

After Phoenix, the Mavericks will play the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, the Sacramento Kings on Monday, and the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Phoenix will also be without one of its stars, as guard Devin Booker (left groin strain) will miss his fourth straight game.

The Suns ended a three-game losing streak with a 110-100 home win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal each scored 27 points, helping Phoenix bounce back from a 117-90 road loss to the Nuggets on Monday.

The disappointing performance in Denver led Suns coach Mike Budenholzer to challenge the team.

It reminded the Suns to focus on the little things when their shooting isn’t on point.

“When you can’t make shots or you just (are) in a little hole as a team, just that physicality and that energy is a good remedy to get you out of that little hole that you (are) in,” Suns forward Kevin Durant said.

The Suns also played with more energy, something that had been missing in previous games.

“Honestly man, if you look at all those games, that’s why we lost — just weren’t having fun,” Beal said. “Weren’t enjoying it, just pressing trying to make the perfect play. … I think just finding that joy, it uplifts you in every category of the game.”

Suns guard Grayson Allen is still in concussion protocol and will miss his third consecutive game.

Phoenix is 2-0 against the Mavericks this season, having won 114-102 at home on Oct. 26 and 114-113 on the road on Nov. 8. Durant averaged 28.5 points in those games, while Doncic averaged 35 points for Dallas.

Charlotte trailed by 14 points at halftime, but Ball’s floater cut the lead to 84-79 with 4:10 left in the third quarter.

The Wizards were up by five early in the second quarter before Corey Kispert hit a 3-pointer to make it 39-31. Kispert’s layup sparked a 7-0 run, capped by a Malcolm Brogdon free throw, giving Washington a 49-35 lead.

Coulibaly’s floater made it 63-47 with 3:38 left in the half, and Poole’s free throw extended the lead to 68-47 before Charlotte cut it to 68-54 at halftime.
