Everton faced another setback on Monday as the Premier League deducted two more points from the club due to their latest breach of financial regulations. This puts Everton closer to the relegation zone with seven games left to play.

Earlier, Everton had received a six-point deduction, later reduced to four after an appeal, for overspending in the seasons leading up to 2021-22. Now, they’ve been penalized again for exceeding spending limits in the seasons up to 2022-23.

The Premier League’s rules allow clubs to exceed spending by a maximum of £105 million over three years. Everton went over by £16.6 million, according to the league.

Although Everton had already been penalized for previous seasons, this second deduction reflects their overspending in more recent years.

Everton expressed concern over what they see as inconsistency in the commission’s decisions and announced plans to appeal. However, appealing could risk harsher punishment from another panel.

With this deduction, Everton drops to 16th place in the league, just two points above the relegation zone. The club emphasized its cooperation with the league and cited mitigating factors such as their admission of the breach and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The reference to the war in Ukraine is linked to Everton’s majority owner, Farhad Moshiri, and his ties to Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, who was sanctioned by the EU after Russia invaded Ukraine.

In response to Everton’s request to delay the second sanction, the independent commission deemed it inappropriate and proceeded with the deduction.
