Rafael Jodar from Spain came from behind to win the U.S. Open boys’ singles title, defeating the top-seeded Nicolai Budkov Kjaer from Norway with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-1) on Saturday.
Jodar, who is ranked 12th, prevented Budkov Kjaer from securing a second consecutive major title. Budkov Kjaer had previously won Wimbledon, making him the first Norwegian man to win a Grand Slam singles title in either juniors or professional play.
Jodar, who will turn 18 on September 17, mentioned after his win that he was uncertain whether he would still attend the University of Virginia as planned.
In the girls’ singles, 15-year-old Mika Stojsavljevic from Britain claimed the title by defeating the 7th seed Wakana Sonobe from Japan with scores of 6-4, 6-4.
For the boys’ doubles, the top-seeded team of Maxim Mrva from the Czech Republic and Rei Sakamoto from Japan won the title by narrowly beating Denis Petak and Flynn Thomas with scores of 7-5, 7-6 (1). The girls’ doubles title went to Norway’s Emily Sartz-Lunde and Malak El Allami from Morocco, who won in a match tiebreaker against Julie Pastikova and Julia Stusek with scores of 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
