Doug Christie earns his first win as Kings’ interim coach following Mike Brown’s departure

Doug Christie became the interim head coach of the Sacramento Kings during a tough time for the team, with a losing streak, fans booing, and questions about firing Mike Brown, who had led the team to its first playoff appearance in 16 years in 2023.

Christie earned his first win as head coach on Monday with a 110-100 victory over the Mavericks, a win that was crucial for both the team’s season and for him personally. It wasn’t easy, as the Kings fell behind by 18 points early against a Dallas team missing stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

During a timeout, Christie told his players: “You’re getting close.” He referenced a Bob Marley lyric about taking a bucket to the well and not knowing when the bottom will fall out. After the Kings received two technical fouls in the second half, Christie reminded his players not to let the referees distract them from their gameplan.

The team responded well, finishing the third quarter with a 17-2 run, breaking their six-game losing streak, and giving Christie his first win as head coach.

“Are we going to still struggle from time to time?” Christie said. “Yes, but the good will needed to happen to show that a lot of things that we talk about — we’re able to do. Now, we need to do it with the consistency, the intensity and the violent aggression, in my opinion, that needs to be there to win games at this level.”

Luka Doncic gestures in the 2nd half

Domantas Sabonis, who had 17 points and 16 rebounds, said it was “really cool” to see Christie get his first win.

“We’ve spent three summers now with him,” Sabonis said. “He works his butt off and just to see him installing what he believes in the guys, and the guys reacting that quickly to it is awesome.”

Being an NBA head coach, even as an interim, still feels unreal to Christie. Before getting the promotion, he had been busy with assistant coaching and scouting. He planned to rest during the team’s weekend trip to Los Angeles but found himself coaching the game against the Lakers on very little sleep.

Christie’s goals as a coach are small steps: first simplifying the offense, then focusing on defense. The Kings allowed only 40 points in the second half against the Mavericks.

He wants the fans, who have seen 12 coaching changes since 2007 and only one playoff appearance, to know they are valued. Christie promised to give them a team they can be proud of, where players will give their best effort. From his players, he hopes for understanding and support.

“This is hard,” Christie said before the game. “This is high leverage, the best in the world. There are only a certain amount of people who do it, from my perspective and the players’ perspective. Whatever you say about the word ‘pressure,’ it’s there.”

Christie explained that his role is to put his players in a good position and then let them play. His success as a coach will depend partly on De’Aaron Fox, the team’s best player, who had earlier pushed back on reports that he was involved in Brown’s firing.

Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks (NBA)

Christie had been an assistant with the Kings since 2021 and served as an interim head coach in 2022 when Brown was sick, winning two games. Monday’s win, however, was his first as a semi-permanent head coach, with the expectation that he’ll get the rest of the season to prove himself.

One area Christie wants to improve is the team’s performance in close games. The Kings are 6-13 in games decided by five points or fewer in the final five minutes. Christie believes that being “clutch” depends on which team is willing to fight and sacrifice.

“When it comes to that point, what are you willing to do?” Christie said. “I know what I’m willing to do for you, and I’m going to support them in any way I can. Because it’ll always be my fault. It’ll never be their fault. They go do their job. I’m here to take the bullets.”

Christie emphasized that turning the season around will take time, and wins will come as a result of the process.

“It’s hard in this league,” Christie said. “Winning is difficult. So, totally understand that. I think they’re beginning to feel it, and that’s going to be the process that we have to go through on a night-to-night basis. I’m here for it, and I think that they’re ready to do it.”

The Dallas Mavericks aim for another win against the Portland Trail Blazers without star Luka Doncic

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Luka Doncic for at least another month, but they continue to win without him. On Saturday, they will try to improve to 8-2 this season without their star when they face the Portland Trail Blazers.

Doncic injured his left calf during a Christmas Day game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, the Mavericks managed to win 98-89 on the road against the Phoenix Suns on Friday, despite Doncic’s absence.

Kyrie Irving, who made his first four shots, ended the game with 20 points, shooting 6 of 21 overall. It was a team effort that helped Dallas secure its 15th win in the last 19 games.

Irving is confident that the team’s success will continue against Portland. “We can’t drop any games,” Irving said after Friday’s win. “This is an important part of the season. This is where teams either start dropping off or improving.”

Four other Mavericks players scored in double digits, and the win went just as coach Jason Kidd had planned. “Injuries are injuries,” Kidd said about Doncic. “We’ve played without him. Next-man-up mentality, and that’s what we’re facing now. The depth of our team is being tested, and those guys in that locker room are up for that test.”

Dallas defeated Portland 132-108 on Monday in their previous meeting. Doncic had 27 points in that game, and the Mavericks have won the last six matchups against the Trail Blazers.

Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings

Portland had been struggling with eight losses in nine games before securing a 122-120 home win over the Utah Jazz on Thursday. Scoot Henderson hit the game-winning shot with just 0.1 seconds left.

“You dream of plays like that,” Henderson said. He finished the game with 18 points and 10 assists, marking his third straight double-digit scoring game after struggling with shooting in the previous three games.

Henderson dismissed the idea that he needed a confidence boost from the game. “I don’t need nothing,” he said. “I need my family, my support, and God. Everything else is gonna be up and down anyway. So, I don’t think I needed a game like this.”

Deni Avdija also had a standout game for Portland, scoring a season-high 27 points with eight rebounds and six assists. Shaedon Sharpe added 27 points and made five 3-pointers, while Deandre Ayton contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Portland’s head coach Chauncey Billups will miss his second straight game due to his grandmother’s funeral. Assistant coach Nate Bjorkgren is stepping in as acting coach. In the loss to Dallas on Monday, Avdija led Portland with 19 points.

Mavericks win against struggling Suns without Luka Doncic

Kyrie Irving made five 3-pointers and scored 20 points as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Phoenix Suns 98-89 on Friday, despite playing without Luka Doncic, who is sidelined with a calf injury.

Daniel Gafford scored 16 points, Maxi Kleber contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, and Spencer Dinwiddie also added 15 points to help the Mavericks win their 15th game in 19 tries. Klay Thompson had 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists as Dallas began a four-game road trip with a win.

Doncic is expected to miss at least a month after injuring his left calf during a Christmas Day game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Mavericks are 7-2 without him this season.

Kevin Durant scored 35 points for the Suns, who have lost four of their last five games. Royce O’Neale added 14 points off the bench, and Bradley Beal scored 11 points on 5-of-18 shooting.

Phoenix star Devin Booker (left groin strain) missed his fourth straight game, and Grayson Allen (concussion) missed his third consecutive contest.

The Suns shot 38.6 percent from the field, including 13 of 35 from 3-point range. Dallas shot 43.8 percent and was 12-of-34 from behind the arc. Irving finished 6-of-21 from the field after making his first four shots.

Paul George and Kevin Durant in the 2nd half

Dallas also played without Dereck Lively II (left hip).

Early in the third quarter, there was a brief altercation involving Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington of the Mavericks and Jusuf Nurkic of the Suns, which led to their ejections.

Nurkic and Marshall exchanged punches, and Washington shoved Nurkic to the floor with 9:02 left in the period.

Irving later scored five points during an 8-0 run, helping Dallas take a 70-52 lead with 3:45 left in the third. Phoenix responded with a 12-2 run, trimming the deficit to 72-64 entering the final quarter.

O’Neale’s three-pointer brought the Suns within 81-75 with 6:32 to play, but Dallas answered with nine straight points to push their lead to 15.

Phoenix made a late push, closing the gap to eight, but Gafford dunked twice in eight seconds to seal the win, putting the Mavericks up 96-84 with 1:11 remaining.

Irving scored 12 points on four 3-pointers in the first quarter as Dallas led 28-25. The Mavericks finished the half on a 7-0 run, including a basket by Marshall with 5.1 seconds left, to lead 55-39 at halftime.

Irving had 15 points at the break for Dallas, while Durant had 13 for Phoenix.

Mavs star Luka Dončić will be sidelined for roughly a month to assess his calf injury

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić will be out for about a month before being re-evaluated for a calf injury he sustained during a Christmas Day loss to Minnesota, according to a source familiar with the injury.

Dončić had an MRI on his strained left calf, but the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said details of the injury have not been made public.

His absence is expected to last long enough that he will likely miss out on major awards, including MVP, this season. Dončić had already missed eight games, five of them due to a sprained right wrist, when he hurt his calf late in the second quarter of the Mavericks’ 105-99 loss to the Timberwolves on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old did not return to the game, limping to the locker room after the Mavericks called a timeout.

The Mavericks, who are the defending Western Conference champions, will play 17 games in the next month, starting Friday night in Phoenix. Dončić was sixth in the NBA in scoring at 28.1 points per game and also averaged 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists.

If Dončić misses 25 games, that would put him well beyond the 15-game maximum required for players to remain eligible for major awards. The most games Dončić has missed in a season so far is 17, which happened in 2021-22 before the current participation rule was put in place.

Luka Doncic and Gradey Dick in the 2nd half

This injury occurred in Dončić’s second game back after missing two games due to a left heel contusion. Dončić has also had a history of left calf issues, having missed parts of the previous two preseasons and sitting out the first three games of the 2022 playoffs.

The Mavericks, who are currently in fourth place in the Western Conference, are 6-2 without Dončić this season. A big part of that success has been his backcourt teammate Kyrie Irving, who is averaging 24 points per game when Dončić is out.

In the offseason, the Mavericks also added four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson from Golden State. Thompson’s shooting ability has helped the team cope with Dončić’s absence.

Spencer Dinwiddie, who was crucial to the Mavericks’ surprising 2022 run to the Western Conference finals, has returned to Dallas and will take on more minutes while Dončić is out.

Another offseason addition, Naji Marshall, scored at least 20 points in each of the first four games Dončić missed due to his wrist injury. Marshall was sidelined by illness for a stretch of five games but has played in the last four games.

Phoenix’s Jusuf Nurkic and Dallas’ Naji Marshall are traded after a clash leads to 3 ejections

Phoenix center Jusuf Nurkic and Dallas forwards Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington were ejected after a brief fight during the Mavericks’ 98-89 win over the Suns on Friday night.

The incident began when Nurkic was called for an offensive foul while being guarded by Daniel Gafford with 9:02 left in the third quarter. The situation quickly escalated as Nurkic confronted Marshall, then swung his hand at Marshall’s head. Marshall responded by punching Nurkic, and Washington pushed Nurkic to the ground before the teams were separated.

“Just protecting each other — that’s what that was,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “Emotions can get high, so our guys protect one another. We talk about it and it was displayed tonight.”

Mavs guard Kyrie Irving shared a lighthearted comment: “Maybe that’s just the way we end 2024, where somebody actually swings in the NBA. Maybe that will help our ratings.”

The referees reviewed the situation and decided to eject all three players.

Suns coach Mike Budenholzer expressed concern about the incident: “I think that level of altercation is not good for our team, it’s not good for anybody individually, it’s not good for our league. I don’t know all the details of what got it to that point.”

The Mavericks were already missing star Luka Dončić, who is out for about a month due to a calf injury he sustained on Christmas Day.

Report: Luka Doncic (calf) sidelined for at least a month

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic will be re-evaluated in a month after suffering a left calf strain, ESPN reported late Thursday night.

The five-time All-Star hurt his calf during a 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. After straining it on what seemed like a minor play in the second quarter, Doncic went to the locker room and did not return for the second half.

Doncic had an MRI on Thursday and consulted with several experts about the injury.

Before leaving the game, the 25-year-old from Slovenia had 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 16 minutes. ESPN reported that Doncic needed crutches to leave the arena.

The Mavericks will play again on Friday against the Phoenix Suns to start a four-game road trip. They will then face the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday and finish the year with a game against the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

In 22 games this season, all of which he started, Doncic has averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists. He is shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from three-point range.

Doncic has dealt with injuries throughout the season, missing two consecutive games last week and five in a row in late November. He has missed a total of eight games so far.

With the loss on Wednesday, Dallas dropped to 19-11.

Mavericks begin road trip in Phoenix without Luka Doncic

The Dallas Mavericks have not yet revealed how long star guard Luka Doncic will be out after injuring his left calf on Christmas Day.

What is certain is that Doncic will not play when the Mavericks start their four-game road trip against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Doncic hurt his calf during the second quarter of a 105-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was expected to have an MRI exam on Thursday.

Some reports suggest that Doncic could be sidelined for an extended period, and the Mavericks are preparing to play without their top player.

“It’s an opportunity for one (or more) of us to step up,” said Dallas guard Klay Thompson. “It can be done. He’s obviously our best player, but we got to be tested, and this is a good test ahead.”

Doncic has missed eight games this season, and the Mavericks have done well without him, with a 6-2 record in those games. One of those wins came against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road, where P.J. Washington had season highs of 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Dallas coach Jason Kidd is confident the team can continue to perform at a high level. The loss to the Timberwolves was just the Mavericks’ fourth in the past 18 games.

“I think this is a group that can win, and they believe that,” Kidd said. “But we also need him.”

That “him” is Doncic, who is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 22 games this season. Last year, the 25-year-old finished third in MVP voting, marking his third top-five finish in the last five seasons.

Doncic scored 14 points in 16 minutes before leaving the game against the Timberwolves. Dallas trailed by as many as 28 points before making a strong comeback that fell short.

Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks

Kyrie Irving led the Mavericks with 39 points, his second-best performance of the season.

Mavericks center Dereck Lively II (left hip) is questionable for Friday’s game. He had six points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes against the Timberwolves.

After Phoenix, the Mavericks will play the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, the Sacramento Kings on Monday, and the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Phoenix will also be without one of its stars, as guard Devin Booker (left groin strain) will miss his fourth straight game.

The Suns ended a three-game losing streak with a 110-100 home win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal each scored 27 points, helping Phoenix bounce back from a 117-90 road loss to the Nuggets on Monday.

The disappointing performance in Denver led Suns coach Mike Budenholzer to challenge the team.

It reminded the Suns to focus on the little things when their shooting isn’t on point.

“When you can’t make shots or you just (are) in a little hole as a team, just that physicality and that energy is a good remedy to get you out of that little hole that you (are) in,” Suns forward Kevin Durant said.

The Suns also played with more energy, something that had been missing in previous games.

“Honestly man, if you look at all those games, that’s why we lost — just weren’t having fun,” Beal said. “Weren’t enjoying it, just pressing trying to make the perfect play. … I think just finding that joy, it uplifts you in every category of the game.”

Suns guard Grayson Allen is still in concussion protocol and will miss his third consecutive game.

Phoenix is 2-0 against the Mavericks this season, having won 114-102 at home on Oct. 26 and 114-113 on the road on Nov. 8. Durant averaged 28.5 points in those games, while Doncic averaged 35 points for Dallas.

Timberwolves hold off Mavericks’ intense rally to secure win

Anthony Edwards scored 26 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Dallas Mavericks 105-99 on Wednesday. The Mavericks played the second half without their star player Luka Doncic, who suffered a left calf strain late in the second quarter.

Doncic got injured with 2:31 left in the second quarter and went straight to the locker room. At that point, he had 14 points in 16 minutes, and Dallas was trailing 51-38.

In the third quarter, the Timberwolves built a 28-point lead before the Mavericks started a comeback led by Kyrie Irving in the final period. Dallas narrowed the gap to 101-99 on Klay Thompson’s 3-pointer with 1:05 left.

Thompson finished with 12 points, making four 3-pointers and surpassing Reggie Miller for fifth on the NBA’s all-time career 3-pointers list with 2,562. Irving scored 15 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter, but he missed a 3-pointer that could have given Dallas the lead with 37 seconds left.

Edwards then scored on the next possession to give the Timberwolves a four-point lead, and Dallas native Julius Randle sealed the win with two free throws.

Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings

The Timberwolves snapped a three-game losing streak, shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 14 of 32 (43.8 percent) from three-point range. Randle finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Rudy Gobert added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Donte DiVincenzo scored 11 points off the bench, and Mike Conley had 10.

For Dallas, Quentin Grimes scored 10 points, and Dereck Lively II grabbed 10 rebounds. The Mavericks were down by two points at the end of the first quarter.

The Timberwolves closed the first half with a 12-2 run, leading 57-40 at halftime, holding Dallas without a field goal in the final 5:46 of the second quarter. Edwards, Gobert, and Randle combined for 34 points in the first half, while the Mavericks shot just 32.6 percent, including 8 of 24 (33.3 percent) from three-point range.

Minnesota led 90-68 at the end of the third quarter, but Dallas started the fourth quarter with a 10-1 run to begin their comeback.

Mavs prepare for another game without Doncic, finding more ways to remain competitive

As the Dallas Mavericks wait to learn how long they will be without Luka Doncic due to his recent left calf injury, they now have another example of how to manage without their star player.

Doncic left the game in the second quarter of a 105-99 loss to Minnesota on Christmas Day after injuring his calf. The Mavericks were down by 28 points late in the third quarter but nearly made a comeback.

Kyrie Irving had a chance to put Dallas ahead with a 3-point attempt in the final minute, but his shot missed, and so did the rally.

“It’s kind of deflating,” said Klay Thompson, who passed Reggie Miller for fifth on the career 3-point list during the comeback attempt. “We have such a deep roster, and that’s why we can withstand this time without him. We obviously are not the same without Luka in the lineup. We are going to do everything we can to go on a run here without him.”

Dallas coach Jason Kidd had no new information on Doncic after the game.

Doncic had been playing on offense when he suddenly stopped, reached for his lower legs, and stayed on the court until the Mavs called a timeout. He limped off with 2:31 left in the first half.

It was just the second game back for Doncic after missing two games with a left heel contusion. The 25-year-old has had issues with his left calf before, missing part or all of the past two preseasons and the first three games of the 2022 playoffs.

Doncic scored 14 points in 16 minutes against the Timberwolves and is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game. He has missed eight games this season, including five with a right wrist sprain. Despite this, Dallas is 6-2 without him.

Luka Doncic gestures in the 2nd half

Though the Mavs made a strong comeback without Doncic, they couldn’t secure the win.

“I think this is a group that can win,” Kidd said. “They believe that. And they’ve shown that. The record speaks for itself. But we also need him. He’s just been hit with some injuries here of late. Hopefully, this one isn’t that serious. But we do need him if we want to win a championship.”

Irving scored 39 points in the loss, while Thompson contributed 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting from three. Thompson now has 2,562 career 3-pointers, surpassing Miller’s 2,560.

Irving is averaging 24 points in the games without Doncic. Both players also missed a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers last week.

Spencer Dinwiddie, who returned to the Mavericks this offseason and has been crucial when Doncic is out, struggled against the Timberwolves, missing all seven of his shots and finishing with just two points.

With Doncic likely out for a few more games, the Mavericks need to find a rhythm and rely more on their supporting players.

“Just playing selfless basketball,” said Thompson, who is in his first season with the Mavericks after winning four championships with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in Golden State. “Realize Kyrie’s going to take us home, he’s our closer.

But for everybody else on the team, it’s just about getting in good rhythm and trusting one another and playing hard, especially defensively. He’s obviously our best player, but we’ve got to be tested, and this is a good test ahead.”

Luka Doncic Shines As Mavericks Secure Win Over Blazers

Luka Dončić made his return after missing two games due to a left heel contusion, scoring 27 points in the Dallas Mavericks’ 132-108 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

The All-Star guard described his performance as “OK.”

“Nothing really special,” said Dončić, who also recorded seven rebounds and seven assists in 30 minutes of play. “The important thing was we got the win. I think everybody was involved, and that’s how we’ve got to play.”

Five Mavericks players scored in double figures as the team secured their 14th victory in their last 17 games, improving to a 19-10 record and holding the fourth spot in the Western Conference.

Mavericks Secure Win Over Blazers (Photo: NFL)

Dončić missed his first shot, a 3-pointer, and ended the first quarter shooting 1-of-6 and 0-of-3 from behind the arc. He finished the game 1-for-7 from three-point range.

In the second quarter, he scored 10 points and had three and-1 plays in the first half.

“Mavs coach Jason Kidd praised Dončić’s ability to use his body to position himself, noting, “He knows the space that he has to get to, and he does it at a very high level.

So, if it’s not an and-1, he’s going to the free throw line. For him being out, getting to the free throw line was important just to get his rhythm.”

Following their defeat in the NBA Cup Western semifinals, the Mavericks and Warriors face off against each other

Two teams that are disappointed to be in San Francisco instead of Las Vegas this weekend will play each other on Sunday night when the Dallas Mavericks visit the Golden State Warriors.

Both teams made it to the Western Conference final four of the NBA Cup but lost in the first round of the tournament. Dallas lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-104 on Tuesday, and the Warriors were eliminated by the Houston Rockets 91-90 on Wednesday.

The Cup format required the two teams that lost in the Western Conference to play each other in an additional game, giving them an extra match to balance out the schedule.

This game will be a rematch from the Cup opener, which was important not because of the tournament but because Klay Thompson was returning to San Francisco after joining Dallas in a sign-and-trade during the offseason. Thompson had a memorable game, scoring 22 points and helping the Warriors win 120-117.

Thompson, a five-time All-Star, has averaged 13.3 points this season, his lowest since his rookie year in 2012. Dallas coach Jason Kidd emphasized there’s more to Thompson than just his numbers.

“His fit is perfect for what we need. He’s been great,” Kidd said. “Klay is a true pro; he comes to work ready to play. We’ve been lucky to have him.”

Thompson’s replacement in the Warriors’ lineup, Buddy Hield, has had similar numbers this season, averaging 14.5 points per game. He scored 14 points in the earlier win over the Mavericks.

Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets

The Warriors found a strong long-distance shooting option in Hield, who averages 3.3 three-pointers per game with a shooting percentage of 42.6%. Thompson averaged 2.9 three-pointers per game last season with a shooting percentage of 37.4%.

Lindy Waters III, another new player for the Warriors, was impressed by Thompson’s homecoming reception last month and believes this rematch will feel different.

“I think maybe the homecoming has already subsided,” Waters said. “I think we’re just looking at it as the Dallas Mavericks coming into our home court, and we’ve got to protect it.”

Both teams are hoping that the time off after being eliminated from the NBA Cup will help them address their recent struggles. The Mavericks had some players feeling unwell for their game against the Thunder, while the Warriors were missing Andrew Wiggins and Moses Moody due to injuries.

“We feel like we’ve given away three games,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “The additional practice time this week really allows us to address some of the situational things — our late-game offense, late-quarter stuff. It’s on us as a group — coaches, players — to make these improvements and start closing these games out.”

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the Thunder to victory over the Mavericks in the NBA Cup

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 39 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Dallas Mavericks 118-104 on Tuesday night in the Western Conference quarterfinals of the NBA Cup.

Oklahoma City will face either the Warriors or the Rockets in Las Vegas on Saturday, with the winner moving on to the championship game of the in-season tournament. Golden State and Houston will play each other in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The Thunder’s victory ended Dallas’ seven-game winning streak and was their fourth straight win.

Gilgeous-Alexander contributed heavily from the outside, making five of Oklahoma City’s season-high 20 3-pointers (the team attempted 50). He also grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists.

Defense played a key role for the Thunder, who scored 36 points from 19 Mavericks turnovers. Oklahoma City also limited Dallas stars Luka Doncic (16 points on 5-of-15 shooting) and Kyrie Irving (17 points on 7-of-14 shooting).

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and James Harden in the 2nd half

Doncic grabbed 11 rebounds, while Klay Thompson and Naji Marshall each scored 19 points for the Mavericks.

The Thunder took control in the third quarter, turning a three-point halftime lead into a 90-73 advantage going into the final 12 minutes. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 16 points in the third quarter, including nine points during a 13-2 run to start the period.

It was a 20-point game early in the fourth, with the Thunder leading 97-77 after a hook shot from Jalen Williams with 10:34 remaining.

Dallas responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Irving as part of a 10-0 run, cutting the lead to 97-87. Later, the Mavericks reduced the deficit to 100-92 thanks to a 3-pointer from Olivier-Maxence Prosper with 7:50 left.

However, Oklahoma City scored the next 11 points to seal the win.

Williams added 18 points for the Thunder, who also got 11 points each from Luguentz Dort and Cason Wallace.

Oklahoma City led 57-54 at halftime. Doncic struggled in the first half, scoring only two points on 1-of-7 shooting.
