Flyers look to bounce back from missed chance as they take on Predators

The Philadelphia Flyers will try to move past a missed opportunity when they play the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night.

The Flyers were ahead 3-0 against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday but ended up losing 5-4 in a shootout. Meanwhile, the Predators lost 5-2 to the New Jersey Devils after Nico Hischier scored a natural hat trick in the second period.

Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist, and Ivan Fedotov made 26 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers lost for the third time in four games, bringing their record to 1-2-1 in their last four. Rookie right winger Matvei Michkov scored his eighth goal of the season as the Flyers finished a five-game homestand with a 2-2-1 record.

“One of our better showings in the offensive zone as far as puck movement and people moving without it,” said Philadelphia coach John Tortorella. “Take out seven or eight minutes, it’s a really good game by us. But that’s a really good team. They’ll capitalize.”

For Frost, it was his second goal of the season and his sixth assist.

“It’s nice to contribute, for sure. It’s been a struggle in that area for me,” Frost said. “It was nice to contribute there and hopefully keep building on it and contribute more going offensively.”

Sean Couturier has scored in back-to-back games for the Flyers, and Travis Konecny has points in nine of the last 10 games (six goals, 10 assists).

Nashville Predators (NHL)

The Predators have alternated wins and losses in their last four games and have lost five of their last seven (2-3-2).

Filip Forsberg and Zachary L’Heureux scored for Nashville against the Devils, but goaltender Juuse Saros was pulled after giving up four goals on 30 shots in the first two periods. Scott Wedgewood stopped all 15 shots he faced in relief.

“I thought (the Devils) were faster, they won more battles, and they were just a better team for 60 minutes,” said Predators captain Roman Josi. “We had a little bit of a push in the third, but it was way too late. We’ve been talking about it — we have one good game and we fall back to a bad game, and we’re not in a position to do that. We need to find consistency.”

L’Heureux, Nashville’s first-round pick (No. 27 overall) in the 2021 draft, made it 4-2 early in the third period with a backhander on a breakaway for his second goal of the season.

“He’s been great,” said Josi of L’Heureux. “He has a lot of energy. Obviously, scores a nice goal. And just in general, gets on the forecheck, he gets pucks back, he’s hard to play against. So, he’s been great.”

Nashville was 0-for-5 on the power play, after having scored on three of eight chances in the previous three games.

Before Monday’s game, the Predators traded forward Philip Tomasino to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Tomasino had one assist in 11 games this season for Nashville.

Nashville forward Michael McCarron (upper-body, day-to-day) did not play on Monday.

Lightning look to build on offensive surge against Capitals

The Tampa Bay Lightning found their rhythm on Monday night against the Colorado Avalanche and are aiming to keep their offense going when they face the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper had criticized his team’s tendency to overpass and try to make flashy plays during two winless games (0-1-1), but he had no complaints on Monday when Brandon Hagel was on fire. Hagel, known for his speed and scoring, set a franchise record with four assists in the first period, tying an NHL record for the most assists in the opening frame, during the Lightning’s 8-2 win over the Avalanche.

Hagel didn’t stop there, adding a fifth assist on Brayden Point’s power-play goal in the second period, giving Point his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Hagel’s five assists tied the franchise record held by Mark Recchi, Martin St. Louis, and his teammate Darren Raddysh.

The most amusing praise came from Nikita Kucherov, who jokingly asked Hagel if he was Bobby Orr after the first period. Hagel laughed it off but was happy to take the compliment.

The Lightning had a dominant performance, moving to 4-1-1 in their last six games. In the first 10 minutes of the game, Nick Perbix, Jake Guentzel, and Kucherov all scored, causing the Avalanche’s starting goalie Justus Annunen to be pulled from the game. Backup Alexandar Georgiev allowed three more goals before being replaced. Annunen returned but allowed more goals in the third period from Guentzel and Michael Eyssimont.

Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets

Tampa Bay played without Nick Paul for the third consecutive game. Cooper confirmed that Paul will be out for the rest of the week.

Meanwhile, in South Florida, the Washington Capitals showed they could still win without their star player, Alex Ovechkin, who is out with a broken leg. Goaltender Logan Thompson was excellent, making 20 saves to improve his record to 9-1-1, while Lars Eller scored twice and Jakob Chychrun had a goal and two assists to lead Washington to a 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers, handing Florida its sixth loss in seven games.

Washington controlled the game, keeping Florida’s defense on its heels by pressuring goalie Spencer Knight and staying relentless with the puck. Chychrun scored the game-winning goal on the power play in the third period, and Washington coach Spencer Carbery was impressed with the way his team played in the final frame.

“I thought the third period was our best period by far, starting with the power play to get us the lead there,” Carbery said. “We completely locked it down and carried the majority of the play in the third. I was really proud of that third period. That’s got to be what it looks like.”

The victory was Washington’s first win in three games without Ovechkin. Wednesday’s game will be the second of six road games for the Capitals over an eight-game stretch.

Streaks clash as struggling Panthers set to face red-hot Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are on a four-game winning streak, while the Florida Panthers are on a four-game losing streak.

In their last eight games, Toronto has won seven, while Florida has only won one out of its last seven.

On Wednesday, the Panthers will host the Leafs in Sunrise, Florida, and both teams will be tested based on their current streaks.

Strangely, Toronto has been on this hot streak without their captain, seven-time All-Star Auston Matthews, who has missed games due to an upper-body injury. Matthews had led the league in goals in three of the past four seasons.

Leafs forward John Tavares said, “Don’t get me wrong — we want Auston back as soon as possible, but it’s just about believing in the group and the depth we have. Everyone is a part of it.”

Mitch Marner has stepped up, leading Toronto in assists (20) and points (28), while William Nylander leads the team in goals (14). Tavares himself has 20 points, ranking third behind Marner and Nylander. Marner has been especially hot, with a four-game multi-point streak, during which he scored four goals and added four assists.

Matthew Tkachuk
Matthew Tkachuk – Florida Panthers

Tavares praised Marner, saying, “He’s an elite player. He makes plays. He does so many good things without the puck. He plays in all situations, and he brings an element to our locker room that is unique. We’re lucky to have him.”

In goal, Toronto has been strong with a duo of Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll. Stolarz, who played for the Panthers last season, has been excellent with a 7-3-2 record, a .927 save percentage, and a 2.18 goals-against average. Woll is 5-2-0 with a .922 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average.

Florida is expected to start goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who was rested in Monday’s 4-1 loss to Washington. Bobrovsky is 9-5-1 with an .885 save percentage and a 3.18 goals-against average. He has a 13-8-1 record with a .904 save percentage and a 2.82 GAA in his career against Toronto.

In that loss to Washington, Panthers forward Sam Reinhart had his 13-game point streak snapped, which was the longest in the NHL this season. Reinhart, who started the week tied for the league lead in goals (16), also leads the Panthers in points (31). He has 11 goals and eight assists over his last 14 games.

With star players like Bobrovsky, Reinhart, Aleksander Barkov, and Matthew Tkachuk, coach Paul Maurice is still confident in his team but acknowledges that “there’s a piece of our game that’s missing right now, and we’re going to have to find it.”

Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola agreed, saying, “We’re a little bit off.” Backup goalie Spencer Knight expressed frustration but remains hopeful: “We’ve done a lot of things right. We’re working hard. Everyone is buying in. Every team in this league is good. Anyone can beat anyone.”

Following a dramatic comeback victory, the Red Wings now focus on facing the penalty-heavy Flames

The Detroit Red Wings have struggled with consistency during the first month and a half of the season, which has hurt their chances of ending an eight-year playoff drought.

Since late October, the Red Wings have not been able to win more than two games in a row. However, they are hopeful that their comeback victory over the New York Islanders on Monday is the start of a turning point. Detroit scored three unanswered goals in the final period to win 4-2 and avoid a fifth loss in six games.

“We’re in desperation mode for sure,” said goaltender Alex Lyon. “We need to play desperate every night, and the best teams in this league play desperate every night. If you’re not desperate, you have to find a way to play desperate. It’s good, it’s fun to play that way and it’s a grind, but it’s kind of where we’re at. We need to continue to push real hard.”

The Red Wings’ power play had been effective until their last three games, but they have failed to score in their last 10 chances, including three on Monday.

Detroit’s top line produced at even strength in the Islanders game, with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond scoring the tying and go-ahead goals, respectively. Raymond has scored in three straight games after only scoring twice in the first 18 games.

“You need a top line if you’re going to be good in this league and if you’re going to have success,” head coach Derek Lalonde said. “Those guys have been doing it of late.”

New York Islanders and St. Louis Blues

The defensive unit has also improved. After allowing 15 goals in a three-game losing streak from Nov. 15-18, the Red Wings have only allowed five goals in their last three games.

“We’ve had some ups and downs, but this team has shown some battle,” Lalonde said. “Hopefully, we can keep building our game.”

The Calgary Flames, on the other hand, had their four-game winning streak broken with a 4-3 loss to Ottawa on Monday. The loss was largely due to penalty trouble, as the Flames were penalized for 20 minutes, giving Ottawa nine power plays. The Senators converted on two of them.

“It’s hard to win when you have 20 penalty minutes, right? It’s one-third of the game in the penalty box,” said defenseman Rasmus Andersson. “They have a good power play. I didn’t think we were playing our best, even at five on five. I think they were a desperate team, they were a little bit more desperate than us to start.”

Coach Ryan Huska blamed a lack of discipline for the loss.

“We took eight minor penalties. I don’t care what league you’re in, you’re not going to win a hockey game or give yourself a chance to win,” he said. “But hey, five on five, we did some things, and there was a fight right to the end, which I’m pretty proud of our group. But we didn’t really give ourselves a chance with the amount of penalties we were taking.”

The loss marked the start of a four-game road trip for Calgary, which will also visit Columbus and Pittsburgh this week.

“We gave it our all until the end. It’s one of these games that you just leave behind you, and you move on,” Andersson said.

Detroit has won the last four matchups against Calgary. It is uncertain whether forward Patrick Kane, who has three goals and seven assists this season, will play Wednesday after missing Monday’s game due to an upper-body injury.

Blues face red-hot Devils after solid debut under new coach

Jim Montgomery quickly made a difference with the St. Louis Blues after taking over as head coach from Drew Bannister. In his first game, Montgomery led the team to a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers.

“It felt like something,” said Blues captain Brayden Schenn. “It felt like we were having fun out there. That’s the main part. It felt like we weren’t sitting back and we played with energy tonight, and we played with the puck. Just wasn’t a couple chances we were able to generate. Power play had a couple good looks. It was just fun to be out there.”

The Blues will try to keep their momentum going on Wednesday night when they face the New Jersey Devils in Newark, N.J.

St. Louis lost 3-1 to the New York Islanders on Saturday, dropping their record to 9-12-1. On Sunday morning, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong hired Montgomery to replace Bannister.

Montgomery, who was let go as the head coach of the Boston Bruins last week, had previously worked as an assistant coach for the Blues and had formed connections with many players on the team.

“He brings a ton of energy to the rink,” Schenn said. “He likes to have fun. At the same time, he’s detailed and he’s serious and he’s respected. It’s our job to bring the energy with him.”

At the time of the coaching change, the Blues were struggling, ranked 26th in the NHL standings by points percentage, 25th on the power play, and 24th in penalty killing. They were averaging just 2.48 goals per game, the fifth-worst in the league.

“This is a talented roster,” Montgomery said. “We’ve got a lot of guys with really good offensive hockey sense. If we’re committed to checking like we were, the offense is going to come.”

Igor Shesterkin
Igor Shesterkin – New York Rangers

The Blues will face a New Jersey team that has been playing very well. The Devils have won three straight and eight of their last 10 games. After starting the season 5-4-2, New Jersey has gone 10-3-0.

They are coming off a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Monday at home.

“Every game, we have a plan,” said Devils captain Nico Hischier. “If you execute it, it gives ourselves a chance to win a hockey game. The plan switches, depends who you’re playing.”

Hischier led the Devils in Nashville by scoring his first NHL hat trick.

“Just happy for him,” said Devils center Erik Haula. “He’s just such an important player for us, obviously. Eight years and first hat trick. You’d think he has five or six of them.”

Before his hat trick, Hischier had gone 10 games without scoring a goal.

“He starts the season on absolute fire, and then he goes cold for a while there,” said Devils coach Sheldon Keefe. “His demeanor didn’t change, his game didn’t change, most importantly he didn’t cheat the game. He continued to meet the tough matchups every night head on, continued to lead the way for us in the faceoff circle and penalty kill.”

New Jersey will be without forward Timo Meier on Wednesday as he has been suspended for one game after cross-checking Nashville’s Zachary L’Heureux and drawing blood.

Tage Thompson set to return as Sabres host Wild

After a successful West Coast road trip, the Buffalo Sabres will return home on Wednesday to play the Minnesota Wild. They are likely to have their top goal-scorer back in the lineup.

Tage Thompson, the Sabres’ leading scorer, told reporters after practice on Tuesday that he would be “ready to go” for the game against the second-place team in the Central Division. The 27-year-old center, who scored 47 goals and 94 points two seasons ago, has been out since Nov. 11 due to a lower-body injury. Even though he has missed five games, Thompson still leads the team with 11 goals and ranks third in points with 18.

The Sabres swept their California road trip, defeating Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Jose over four days. After a break on Sunday and Monday, they returned to practice on Tuesday morning.

The winning streak has Buffalo tied for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. However, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff, who was last in charge when the team made the playoffs in 2011, knows his team needs to keep improving, especially against tough competition.

Ruff said that Tuesday’s practice did not start as well as he would have liked. “You come in off a road trip, and you’re hoping that the team can be ready to exceed the intensity that we were able to bring on the trip,” Ruff explained. “It’s the only way to get better.”

Buffalo Sabres players celebrate after a goal

One area Ruff wants to improve is staying out of the penalty box. While on the road, Buffalo gave opponents 12 power-play opportunities, while they only had seven chances on the power play.

Minnesota is coming to Buffalo after a 4-1 loss at home to Central Division leaders Winnipeg on Monday. This was their second straight loss, following a shootout defeat to Calgary on Saturday.

Even though the Wild lost, they played hard. The team set a season-high 44 shots on goal, with half of those coming in the first period. The 22 shots in the first period were the second-most of any team in a single period this season, and the most the Wild had in one period in nearly seven years.

Wild head coach John Hynes felt his team played well but couldn’t get past Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, a two-time Vezina Trophy winner. “There’s some things that we can grow from the game, but we got a lot of hockey this week too,” Hynes said. “So, we got to put this one behind us, grab what we can take out of it, and then we got to make sure that we’re refreshed again (Tuesday) and we’re ready to go against Buffalo.”

Despite the two losses, Minnesota’s 30 points in 21 games match the franchise’s best start, which was set in the 2013-14 season.

Wild left winger Kirill Kaprizov leads the team with 13 goals and 21 assists. His 34 points are tied for third in the NHL, alongside Vegas’ Jack Eichel, just one point behind co-leaders Martin Necas of Carolina and Nathan MacKinnon of Colorado.

Minnesota might be without defenseman Jakub Lauko, who left Monday’s game early with a lower-body injury. Hynes did not provide an update on Lauko’s condition after the game.

Hurricanes and Rangers heading in opposite directions ahead of playoff rematch

The Carolina Hurricanes are in a strong position to secure home-ice advantage in the playoffs, while the New York Rangers seem far from the team that won their second-round playoff series last season in six games.

On Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C., the Hurricanes will try to extend their home win streak to nine games, while the Rangers aim to avoid a fourth straight loss. This will be the first matchup of the season between the two Metropolitan Division teams.

Last season, Carolina fell short of winning the division by just three points, finishing with 111. The title went to the Rangers, who also claimed the Presidents’ Trophy after earning a league-best 114 points.

A little more than a month into the current season, Carolina is in third place in the league with 31 points. At home, they have outscored opponents 41-16 since a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in their home opener on Oct. 11.

The Hurricanes have scored at least four goals in each game of their home win streak and have reached that mark 16 times in 21 games this season.

They kept the streak going with a 6-4 win over the Dallas Stars on Monday. Carolina scored five goals in the third period, including a tiebreaking power-play goal from Martin Necas with less than three minutes left, after trailing 3-1.

“I already know what we have,” said Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour. “It’s just, can they grasp how we have to play every shift? I think sometimes we get a little off and try to do things differently, then all of a sudden, we get to the way we have to play… We don’t always get the result like that, but you’re giving yourself a chance. Really, a game like that, that’s what you’re hoping you get out of it.”

Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars

Sebastian Aho scored the first goal in the third-period comeback and had three assists. Seth Jarvis scored in his first game since Nov. 9 and added two assists, including one on Necas’ goal.

Despite uncertainty in goal, the Hurricanes continue to win. Frederik Andersen is still recovering from knee surgery, and Pyotr Kochetkov is in concussion protocol after a collision with defenseman Sean Walker during Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Spencer Martin started in goal on Monday.

The Rangers started strong with a 5-0-1 record but have struggled since, going 7-7-0 in their last 14 games and losing three in a row. They ended a four-game road trip with a 6-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, then suffered another loss at home, 5-2, to the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

Will Cuylle scored twice, but key players like Vincent Trocheck, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad combined for only six shots on goal and were a combined minus-7, as the Rangers were outshot 44-29.

“We need to be better,” said New York coach Peter Laviolette. “Everybody needs to be better. It’s not good enough what we’re doing.”

Monday’s loss came after reports that Rangers general manager Chris Drury had told other teams he might be open to trading forward Chris Kreider and defenseman Jacob Trouba, who has a no-move clause for 15 teams.

Kreider missed his first game since Jan. 16, 2023, on Monday due to an upper-body injury and is listed as day-to-day. He has nine goals in 19 games this season. Trouba was on the ice for two goals in Monday’s loss and has only two points since recording four assists in the first three games of the season.

NHL to hold hearing for Devils’ Timo Meier over cross-checking incident

New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier will have a hearing with the NHL on Tuesday, the day after his cross-check to Zachary L’Heureux caused the Nashville Predators forward to leave the game.

In the third period of the Devils’ 5-2 win in Newark, N.J., Meier tried to poke the puck away from Predators goaltender Juuse Saros at 12:17. L’Heureux took issue with this move, which led Meier to respond by cross-checking him twice—once to his body and then to his face. The second cross-check caused L’Heureux to bleed.

New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators

Meier was given a five-minute cross-checking penalty and a game misconduct after the incident. L’Heureux left the game and did not return.

Meier, 28, has earned 15 points (seven goals and eight assists) in 24 games this season.

The Swiss forward has accumulated 397 career points (198 goals and 199 assists) in 565 games with the Sharks and Devils since being drafted by San Jose with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

New Jersey traded for Meier from the Sharks in a multi-player deal on February 26, 2023.

Rams WR Demarcus Robinson taken into custody on DUI suspicion

After catching a touchdown pass on “Sunday Night Football,” Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol, who released the news on Monday.

The police report states that Robinson was driving a Dodge sedan at speeds over 100 mph on US-101 in Woodland Hills, California, at 5:13 a.m. on Monday. Officers said Robinson displayed “objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment.” He was given a citation and then released to “a responsible party,” according to the CHP.

The Rams have not yet commented on the situation, as reported by NFL.com.

Robinson had a 2-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter of the Rams’ 37-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. He had one more reception in the game, which gained 13 yards.

Report: Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell set to start against Chiefs

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell is expected to start Friday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL Network.

O’Connell, 26, is eligible to return from injured reserve in time for the game. The Raiders (2-9) recently lost quarterback Gardner Minshew to a season-ending broken collarbone during their 29-19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

O’Connell returned to practice on Monday and took first-team reps. He had been sidelined since injuring his thumb in a 20-15 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 20.

This season, O’Connell has completed 52 of 82 passes for 455 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in four games (two starts). Last season, as a rookie, he threw for 2,218 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games (10 starts). O’Connell was drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Desmond Ridder, 25, stepped in for Minshew on Sunday, completing 5 of 10 passes for 64 yards. Ridder has played in three games this season, going 16 of 26 for 138 yards with one touchdown.

Minshew, 28, had completed 25 of 42 passes for 230 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Broncos. This was his first season with the Raiders, where he passed for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Minshew had joined the Raiders as a free agent after playing for Jacksonville (2019-2020), Philadelphia (2021-2022), and Indianapolis (2023). He won the starting job in camp but was benched several times in a tough season for the Raiders, who have now lost seven straight games.
