Eagles Secure NFC East Championship with Win Against Cowboys in Philadelphia

Saquon Barkley ran for 167 yards, bringing his total to 2,005 yards for the season. He needs 101 more yards in next week’s regular-season finale to surpass Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105 yards set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams.

Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett, who filled in for the injured Jalen Hurts, threw and ran for touchdowns before leaving the game with rib injuries. The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Dallas Cowboys 41-7, securing the NFC East title.

The Eagles (13-3) were ahead 24-7 in the third quarter when Pickett was hit hard by defensive end Micah Parsons, ending his first start for the Eagles.

Tanner McKee, a third-string quarterback, came in and helped the team finish the drive with a field goal. McKee later threw two touchdown passes: one for 20 yards to A.J. Brown and another for 25 yards to DeVonta Smith. The Eagles fans cheered loudly as their team took control of the game to win the division title and at least secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Hurts got injured in the previous week’s loss to Washington and remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol, so he didn’t practice this week. This gave Pickett a chance to start. Pickett, who was traded to the Eagles from Pittsburgh in the offseason, played with extra protection on his ribs after he was hurt against the Commanders.

Despite his sore ribs, Pickett was excited about this start, having grown up as an Eagles fan in central New Jersey, not far from the stadium. He recalled many happy memories of attending games with his dad and grandfather.

Pickett, 26, said he had plenty of family at the game, along with over 60,000 Eagles fans. However, his day ended early as he finished 10 of 15 for 143 yards.

Dallas Cowboys players celebrate in the game

Since the Eagles have already secured the division title, it’s likely Hurts will rest for another week before the playoffs. Pickett may be sidelined as well, which could leave McKee to start.

Barkley had 31 carries, with his final one going for 23 yards to pass the 2,000-yard mark. He may also sit out next week instead of risking injury while trying to break Dickerson’s record. Barkley, who left the Giants to sign a three-year, $26 million deal with the Eagles, set the record for the most rushing yards in a player’s first season with a new team.

Pickett’s family had to wait a bit for the Eagles to get things going. On Dallas’ first drive, Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown. Cooper Rush, the Cowboys’ quarterback, threw for 147 yards and two interceptions, and on the next drive, he tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert.

Pickett connected with Grant Calcaterra for a 34-yard gain, then threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Smith, who caught six passes for 120 yards, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead.

The Eagles’ defense played a big role in breaking open the game for Pickett, recovering a fumble that led to Jake Elliott’s 31-yard field goal. Gardner-Johnson then made another interception, setting up Pickett’s rushing touchdown on a “tush push,” just like Hurts does.

Pickett, who had 143 yards passing, took two big hits on the same drive. Odighizuwa was flagged for roughing the passer, and Parsons delivered the hit that ended his day.

The Eagles were happy to have a capable backup quarterback like Pickett, who had a 14-10 record as a starter with the Steelers. His performance led Pittsburgh legend and Fox broadcaster Terry Bradshaw to say the Steelers shouldn’t have let him go.

The Philadelphia Eagles secured a narrow victory in Philadelphia, earning the NFC East title

Saquon Barkley ran for 167 yards to surpass 2,000 yards for the season, backup quarterback Kenny Pickett ran and threw for touchdowns before leaving the game with injured ribs, and the Philadelphia Eagles secured the NFC East title by defeating the Dallas Cowboys 41-7 on Sunday.

Barkley now has 2,005 yards and needs 101 more in the final regular-season game to surpass Eric Dickerson’s 2,105 yards from 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Eagles (13-3) were ahead 24-7 in the third quarter when Pickett, starting in place of the injured Jalen Hurts, was hit by defensive end Micah Parsons, ending his first start. Tanner McKee, the third-string quarterback, took over and the Eagles finished the drive with a field goal.

McKee later threw two touchdown passes, one for 20 yards to A.J. Brown and another for 25 yards to DeVonta Smith, helping the Eagles finish off their division rivals in front of a cheering crowd. This win secured the NFC East title and at least the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Hurts was injured during last week’s loss to Washington and is still in the concussion protocol. He didn’t practice during the week, which allowed Pickett to start. Pickett, who was traded from Pittsburgh in the offseason, wore extra protection on his jersey after suffering a rib injury while playing against the Commanders.

Despite his sore ribs, Pickett was excited about his start. He grew up as an Eagles fan in central New Jersey, about 80 miles from Lincoln Financial Field, and had fond memories of going to games with his father and grandfather since he was 5. Pickett said he had a lot of family at the stadium cheering for him, along with over 60,000 other Eagles fans.

Unfortunately, Pickett’s dream day ended early. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards.

With the division title secured, Hurts will likely rest for another week before the playoffs. Pickett may also be out now, possibly leading to McKee starting. Barkley had 31 carries, and his final run of 23 yards took him over 2,000 yards.

Saquon Barkley gets past Myles Cole in the 2nd half

He might also sit out next week to avoid injury as he chases Dickerson’s record. Barkley, who left the Giants to sign a three-year, $26 million guaranteed deal with the Eagles, has set the NFL record for most rushing yards in a player’s first season with a new team.

Pickett’s friends and family had to wait a bit before seeing him play after Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown on Dallas’ first drive. Cooper Rush, who threw for 147 yards and had two interceptions, then led Dallas on a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert.

Pickett responded by connecting with Grant Calcaterra for 34 yards and then hitting Smith, who caught six passes for 120 yards, for a 22-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead.

The Eagles’ defense helped Pickett by recovering a fumble, which led to a Jake Elliott 31-yard field goal. Gardner-Johnson’s second interception of the day set up Pickett’s rushing touchdown on a tush push, just like Hurts does.

Pickett, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards, took two hard hits on the same drive: Odighizuwa was flagged for roughing the passer, and Parsons delivered the hit that forced Pickett out of the game.

The Eagles were glad to have a reliable backup quarterback who had a 14-10 record as a starter with the Steelers. Pittsburgh legend Terry Bradshaw, commenting for Fox, said the Steelers should not have let him go.

Giants look to avoid franchise worst finish in season finale against resting Eagles in New York

With the Philadelphia Eagles resting key players on Sunday, the New York Giants will try to avoid setting a franchise record for most losses in a single season.

The Giants (3-13) have never lost 14 games in a season. Their worst records were 4-13 in 2021 and 3-13 in 2017. Heading into Week 18, New York shares the worst record in the NFL with the New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, and Cleveland Browns.

Though it hurt their chances of securing the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Giants broke a team-record 10-game losing streak with a 45-33 win over the Indianapolis Colts last weekend.

The Eagles (13-3) have already secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC and are likely to rest star running back Saquon Barkley, along with other key players, as they prepare for the playoffs.

“He’ll probably be somebody that rests,” confirmed Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni on Wednesday.

Barkley is 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984.

Philadelphia Eagles players in the practice

“Obviously it’s a very special record that’s been standing for a very long time by a great player,” Sirianni said. “It’s a team record that everybody’s involved in. You weigh all those things, but at the end of the day, you just try to do what’s best for the team.”

“We’ve put ourselves in a position to be in this situation… It wasn’t the easiest decision to go through, but we have great people in this building and had a lot of input from a lot of people, players included,” Sirianni added.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll spoke to the media shortly before Sirianni’s announcement about Barkley. Daboll’s focus is on preparing the team the same way they always do.

“We’ll just prepare like we normally do, in meetings and practice, and get ready to play our game,” Daboll said.

“… I’d say they’ve got a good football team, and Saquon’s a good football player. Got a lot of wins, productive, good team.”

A lot has changed since the Eagles defeated the Giants 28-3 at MetLife Stadium in Week 7. Back then, Daniel Jones was still the Giants’ quarterback. He was sacked seven times and finished with just 99 passing yards on 14-of-21 attempts.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw one touchdown pass and ran for two more.

Jones is now on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, and Hurts was still in concussion protocol as of Wednesday. Drew Lock will make his fifth start for the Giants on Sunday.

Nick Sirianni and Kellen Moore react after a 2-point conversion

Sirianni said no decision has been made on which quarterback will start for the Eagles, especially with Kenny Pickett dealing with a rib injury. Tanner McKee or Ian Book could step in for Philadelphia.

In their Week 7 victory, the Eagles held the Giants’ offense to just 119 total yards. The Eagles have won six of the last seven matchups with the Giants, including in the playoffs.

If the Eagles win, they will match their franchise record of 14-3, which they set last season before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

In addition to Hurts and Pickett, wide receivers A.J. Brown (knee, rest) and DeVonta Smith (wrist, rest) were listed as non-participants in Wednesday’s walkthrough practice. The Eagles also activated tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) from the 21-day practice window on Wednesday.

For the Giants, linebacker Micah McFadden (neck), center John Michael Schmitz Jr. (ankle), and right tackle Evan Neal (rib, hip) did not practice on Wednesday. Defensive tackle Armon Watts is out after undergoing knee surgery.

Eagles Dominate Cowboys in Week 17, Clinch NFC East Title and Strengthen Playoff Momentum

In a commanding Week 17 performance, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Dallas Cowboys, securing a decisive 41-7 victory. The win clinched the NFC East division title for the Eagles, marking their first since 2022 and their 11th since 2001, a span in which they lead the division in titles. This victory also granted the Eagles their fourth 13-win season, a benchmark that previously aligned with Super Bowl appearances in 2004, 2017, and 2022. The game saw the Eagles’ offense shine after a slow start, scoring on six consecutive drives and sweeping the Cowboys for the first time since 2011.

Kenny Pickett, the Eagles’ backup quarterback stepping in for an injured Jalen Hurts, delivered an efficient performance. Despite limited opportunities, he completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score. Pickett’s connection with DeVonta Smith was pivotal, as Smith’s sharp route running helped him secure a 22-yard touchdown catch in the first half. Unfortunately, Pickett exited in the third quarter after aggravating a rib injury due to a late hit, leading to Tanner McKee taking over as quarterback.

McKee, the Eagles’ third-string quarterback, seamlessly continued the offensive momentum. In his first NFL regular-season action, McKee threw for 54 yards and two touchdowns on just four pass attempts. His highlights included a 20-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and a 25-yard scoring throw to DeVonta Smith. Smith finished the game with an impressive 120 receiving yards and two touchdowns, further showcasing his dominance against a depleted Cowboys secondary.

The Cowboys’ backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, struggled against the Eagles’ defense. Rush threw an early pick-six to safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and finished with 147 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Gardner-Johnson’s impact extended beyond the pick-six, as he secured a second interception before halftime, contributing to three Eagles takeaways in the first half that all resulted in points.

Saquon Barkley, the NFL’s rushing yards leader, took center stage in the second half as the Eagles protected their commanding lead. Barkley rushed for 167 yards on 31 carries, surpassing the 2,000-yard mark for the season. He became the ninth player in NFL history to achieve this milestone and now stands just 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record. The decision to play Barkley in the final game may determine whether he breaks this long-standing record.

The Eagles’ defense, anchored by Gardner-Johnson, proved formidable. His pick-six and subsequent interception in critical moments highlighted his ability to change games. Despite struggling in some coverage situations earlier this season, Gardner-Johnson’s knack for creating turnovers has been a cornerstone of the Eagles’ defensive success. With 12 interceptions in just 28 games with the Eagles, he remains a key playmaker.

The Cowboys’ defense, led by All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons, faced challenges containing the Eagles’ multifaceted attack. Parsons, who has been a dominant force since returning from injury, couldn’t prevent the Eagles from exploiting Dallas’ injury-riddled secondary. Backup cornerbacks struggled against Philadelphia’s skilled receivers, particularly DeVonta Smith, who capitalized on favorable matchups throughout the game.

Philadelphia’s offensive strategy evolved after a lackluster start. The team initially leaned on the run but found success once Pickett began airing it out in the second quarter. His rhythm with Smith and other targets helped the Eagles establish a commanding lead before halftime. McKee’s seamless transition into the game further underscored the depth and adaptability of the Eagles’ roster.

The Cowboys’ offense failed to find consistency under Rush, who showed improvement from his Week 10 outing against Philadelphia but remained error-prone. The Eagles capitalized on Dallas’ turnovers, converting them into points that effectively sealed the game by halftime. Dallas’ inability to protect the football and sustain drives underscored their struggles without starting quarterback Dak Prescott.

Tensions flared late in the game, leading to the ejections of Cowboys players Jalen Brooks and Troy Pride, along with Eagles cornerback Sidney Brown. These skirmishes reflected the frustration of a Dallas team unable to keep pace with their rivals. Additionally, missed opportunities, including a 61-yard field goal attempt by Dallas kicker Brandon Aubrey, further compounded the Cowboys’ woes.

The Eagles now face decisions heading into Week 18, including how to manage playing time for key players like Barkley with the playoffs secured. Barkley’s pursuit of the rushing record is a compelling storyline, but Philadelphia must balance individual accolades with postseason readiness. Regardless, the team’s depth and cohesion were on full display in this dominant win.

This victory cements Philadelphia’s place as a top contender in the NFC heading into the playoffs. With strong performances across the roster, including contributions from backups like Pickett and McKee, the Eagles demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Their ability to dominate a division rival bodes well for their Super Bowl aspirations.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni plans to bench Saquon Barkley in the season finale in Philadelphia

Saquon Barkley had an emotional conversation with his dad about his chance at breaking the NFL single-season rushing record.

The Philadelphia Eagles running back’s pursuit of Eric Dickerson’s record is now over, as Barkley will not play in the Eagles’ final regular-season game on Sunday. This decision prevents him from having a shot at breaking the record.

Barkley shared that his dad, Alibay, wanted him to play. “Selfishly for him, you’ve got to think about it … our last name would have been attached to that,” Barkley said. “But at the end of the day, the most important thing is winning football games.

He’s the one that raised me to kind of be all about the team, too. He can have his little selfish moment, but he’ll get over it.”

Barkley said he has come to terms with it too, understanding the bigger picture. His offensive line, who had hoped to help him break the record, and fans who wanted to witness history at the Linc against the New York Giants will also be disappointed.

Barkley finishes the season with 2,005 rushing yards, just 101 yards shy of Dickerson’s record of 2,105 yards, which was set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams.

Nick Sirianni gestures in the 1st half

The Eagles (13-3) have already clinched the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed, leaving little at stake in the game against the Giants. As a result, coach Nick Sirianni decided, after talking to Barkley, players, coaches, and general manager Howie Roseman, to rest Barkley and avoid any potential injury to one of the team’s key players.

Barkley is only the ninth running back in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season.

“May never get another opportunity like that again,” Barkley said. “So, I’m down. But at the end of the day, I don’t care for putting the team at risk. He’s the head coach for a reason. He makes those decisions.”

Barkley isn’t alone in being rested. Many starters, including quarterback Jalen Hurts (who sat out Sunday’s win over Dallas due to a concussion), will also be rested to ensure they are healthy for the upcoming NFC wild-card playoff game.

“I’m just happy I didn’t have to make that decision,” Barkley said. “Nick made it pretty easy on me and I’m truly at peace with it.”

The Eagles had a bye week in Week 5 and, after starting 2-2, won 10 straight games to take control of the division. However, after 12 consecutive games, including Barkley’s NFL-high 345 carries, Sirianni decided to give both Barkley and other starters some rest before the playoffs.

Inside the locker room, some players expressed disappointment that Barkley won’t get a chance at the record. “Everybody would like to have the record,” offensive tackle Lane Johnson said. “We’d also like to have the player for a playoff game, and win a playoff game with him.”

Barkley had hoped for the record, but after a night of thinking it over, he accepted that resting was the right decision. “On Sunday, I probably didn’t care too much for it,” Barkley said. “When I slept on it, it was like, it was an opportunity to implement my name in football history.”

While Barkley won’t break Dickerson’s record, he did set the Eagles’ record for most rushing yards in a season and set a franchise record for total scrimmage yards (2,283). He passed LeSean McCoy, Brian Westbrook, and Wilbert Montgomery for the best season by a running back in Eagles history. McCoy held the previous record with 2,146 yards in 2013.

Saquon Barkley reacts after running for a touchdown in the 2nd half

Throughout the season, Barkley delivered outstanding performances, including 147 yards against New Orleans, 176 yards against the Giants, and a career-high 255 yards against the Los Angeles Rams in November.

“If I had to go out there and get the record, I felt really good enough to do it, too,” Barkley said. “I made a joke to one of my boys the other night, my body don’t feel like I ran for 2,000 yards. That’s a good thing.”

Hurts is still in concussion protocol and could not practice or play until cleared. Kenny Pickett started last week and ran and threw for a touchdown before leaving with an injury. Tanner McKee, the third-string quarterback, threw two touchdown passes to finish off a victory over Dallas.

The Eagles only held a walkthrough on Wednesday, and Pickett was listed as missing practice, meaning McKee is likely to start Sunday.

While Barkley may wonder “what if,” the decision also takes away any debate about whether he could have set the record in a 17th game, which was not available to Dickerson in 1984. Dickerson broke O.J. Simpson’s 1973 record of 2,003 yards rushing in 12 games, while Simpson’s record was set in a 14-game season before the NFL expanded to 16 games in 1978.

“I didn’t sign here to break Eric Dickerson’s record,” Barkley said. “I came here to win a Super Bowl.”

Eagles to sit RB Saquon Barkley, ending record pursuit

Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson will keep the NFL’s single-season rushing record for at least another year.

With the Philadelphia Eagles already in the playoffs, head coach Nick Sirianni announced on Wednesday that some players will be rested for the final game of the regular season against the New York Giants.

Among those sitting out will be star running back Saquon Barkley, who needed 101 yards to break Dickerson’s long-standing record of 2,105 rushing yards set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Eagles (13-3) have already secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC, so health is the team’s priority heading into their season finale against the 3-13 Giants.

“It’s a very special record that’s been standing for a very long time by a great player,” said Sirianni. “But you try to do what’s best for the team. Our goals are to have success and play well in the next game we play.”

Barkley has topped 101 rushing yards in 11 games this season, including a 167-yard performance in Sunday’s 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys. That performance helped him become the ninth player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season.

On Sunday, Barkley said he would respect Sirianni’s decision about playing in the finale.

Philadelphia Eagles players celebrate after a touchdown

“Whatever his decision is, I’m all for it,” Barkley said. “If his mindset is, we’ll go out there and try it, I’ll go out there and try it. If his mindset is, let’s rest and get ready for this run, I’m all for that, too … I came here to do something special. Breaking a record is special, but I want a banner up there. I think we all do.”

In his first season with the Eagles, Barkley leads the NFL in rushing attempts (345), rushing yards (2,005), and yards from scrimmage (2,283).

Sirianni also mentioned that quarterback Jalen Hurts is still in concussion protocol, and the team has not yet decided who will start against the Giants in light of Kenny Pickett’s rib injury. Either Tanner McKee or Ian Book could take the starting role.

Hurts and Pickett both got injured during the Eagles’ 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders on Dec. 22. Pickett threw for 143 yards in that game and also against the Cowboys before McKee came in, completing 3 of 4 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

In other news, the Eagles also activated tight end Dallas Goedert’s 21-day practice window on Wednesday. Goedert was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 7, a week after suffering a knee injury in the Eagles’ 24-19 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Goedert, 29, had started all nine games he played this season, catching 38 passes for 441 yards and two touchdowns. He was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft and has since racked up 345 receptions for 4,030 yards and 24 touchdowns in 92 career games (75 starts).

Eagles Turn to Kenny Pickett as Jalen Hurts Misses Key Matchup Against Cowboys

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will not play in Sunday’s critical game against the Dallas Cowboys as he remains in concussion protocol. Head coach Nick Sirianni announced the decision, explaining that Hurts missed all practices this week and is not expected to clear protocol in time. This setback follows Hurts’ injury during last week’s narrow 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders. The Eagles are turning to backup quarterback Kenny Pickett to start in Hurts’ absence.

Kenny Pickett, who sustained a rib injury in the same game, has been practicing and appears ready to step into the starting role. While he was a full participant in Thursday’s session, he was limited on Friday, but the team remains confident in his ability to lead. Tanner McKee will serve as the emergency third quarterback, and the Eagles have also added Ian Book to their practice squad for additional depth. Pickett’s first start for the Eagles presents an opportunity for the team, sitting at 12-3, to clinch the NFC East title.

Eagles Turn to Kenny Pickett as Jalen Hurts Misses Key Matchup Against Cowboys

Pickett, a New Jersey native and lifelong Eagles fan, is eager to embrace the challenge. Reflecting on his preparation, he told reporters he’s excited and feels well-prepared to deliver a strong performance. Having replaced Hurts early in last week’s game, Pickett showed promise despite some mistakes, completing 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception. This time, with a full week of practice, he’s aiming to improve and lead the team to a crucial victory.

The Eagles have expressed their faith in Pickett’s ability to rise to the occasion. Wide receiver A.J. Brown praised the young quarterback’s composure and leadership, noting his confidence in commanding the huddle. Despite limited game experience, Pickett’s teammates are optimistic about his potential and have rallied around him as he steps into this important role for the team.

Pickett, 26, comes with notable experience from his time as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback. Traded to Philadelphia earlier this year, he has thrown for over 4,600 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 29 career games while adding 303 rushing yards and four scores. Meanwhile, Hurts has been having an exceptional season, contributing 18 passing touchdowns and an NFL-leading 14 rushing touchdowns. His absence will be felt, but the Eagles are hopeful Pickett can help them secure a critical win against their division rivals.

Injured Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against Dallas

Jalen Hurts is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol, meaning the Philadelphia Eagles will have to play against Dallas without their starting quarterback.

Hurts remains sidelined due to the ongoing effects of a concussion he suffered in a game against Washington. He was injured early when his head hit the ground on one play and was later hit in the helmet by linebacker Frankie Luvu during another.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni stated the team would rely on the medical staff daily to assess Hurts’ recovery. Hurts, who threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more in the first matchup against Dallas in November, did not practice this week.

This leaves backup Kenny Pickett in line to start on Sunday, even though Pickett had a rib injury from playing in relief during the Commanders game.

Pickett completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards against Washington, including a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and one interception.

Originally from New Jersey, Pickett shared that he has fond memories of attending games at Lincoln Financial Field with his father and grandfather since he was five. The chance to run out of the home team’s tunnel as the starting quarterback left him excited.

Nick Sirianni gestures in the 1st half

“It’s a big opportunity,” Pickett said. “I’ve been working hard to stay ready. I felt like I was in a good position last game with my preparation. Now, having a week to practice, I’ll feel even better going into the stadium.”

Pickett, a first-round pick from Pitt in 2022, started 14 games for the Steelers, with a 14-10 record.

With Hurts out, the Eagles have moved third-stringer Tanner McKee to backup, and they signed quarterback Ian Book to the practice squad this week.

There are examples of quarterbacks returning the week after entering concussion protocol. Last season, Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence suffered a head injury in Week 15 against Baltimore but was cleared in time to start the next game.

The Eagles (12-3) might decide to rest Hurts for safety reasons, as a win against Dallas or the New York Giants would clinch the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Hurts has had an impressive season, throwing 18 touchdowns and only five interceptions. His rushing game, including 14 rushing touchdowns, has played a major role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl contention. In 2017, the Eagles won the Super Bowl with backup quarterback Nick Foles, who stepped in after starter Carson Wentz was injured.

The Eagles aim to secure the NFC East title, with Hurts’ head injury remaining a major concern

Jalen Hurts might miss the game against Dallas that could clinch the NFC East title due to the lingering effects of a concussion.

The Eagles might also decide to rest Hurts to be cautious—even if he’s cleared to play before Sunday’s game—and protect their star quarterback from any further injury in the final two games.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni kept quiet this week about which quarterback will start on Sunday, mainly because of the head injury Hurts suffered in last week’s loss to Washington, which put him in the concussion protocol.

The situation was made more complicated when backup quarterback Kenny Pickett got injured with a rib problem after filling in for Hurts in his first real game in nearly a year.

Tanner McKee, the third-string quarterback, could move into a backup role or possibly even start against the Cowboys.

The Eagles’ quarterback situation has become the main focus, even more so than Saquon Barkley’s pursuit of Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record, as the team heads into the final two games.

The Eagles (12-3) are almost certain to win the division title, as they are two games ahead of Washington (10-5), and they will likely hold the No. 2 seed in the conference, no matter who starts at quarterback heading into the playoffs. Even with an uncertain quarterback situation, the Eagles are still 7½-point home favorites to beat Dallas, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

Nick Sirianni and Kellen Moore react after a 2-point conversion

Sirianni appreciates that quarterback depth has been a strong point for the Eagles.

“We feel good about that room,” he said.

So, why risk playing Hurts against Dallas? There’s little reason to put Hurts on the field just a week after taking two hits to the head. Giving him an extra week off—maybe even two if the game against the Giants doesn’t matter—could help his recovery before a home playoff game.

The Eagles learned from a similar situation last season when Hurts and star receiver A.J. Brown were both injured in the final game against the Giants, which had little impact on the standings. Both players were hurt unnecessarily, and the Eagles were knocked out the next week by Tampa Bay in the NFC wild-card playoff game.

If Hurts can’t play, the Eagles have other options. Pickett completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards in relief, throwing a touchdown pass to Brown and an interception. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, had a 14-10 record as a starter for the Steelers before being traded to the Eagles in the offseason.

McKee, a sixth-round pick from Stanford in 2023, has yet to play in a regular-season game. The 6-foot-6, 231-pound quarterback usually works on the scout team in practice or gets extra reps with the top receivers after practice.

“Every week, every opportunity, it’s knowing it could be my shot, my chance,” McKee said.

He might finally get that chance against Dallas.

Sirianni and Ertz resolved any misunderstandings after their brief exchange following Washington’s victory

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and Commanders tight end Zach Ertz cleared up any confusion after exchanging words following Washington’s comeback win over Philadelphia on Sunday.

Videos showed Ertz giving Sirianni a high-five as they were walking in opposite directions. Sirianni then turned to say something to Ertz, who turned around and walked back to his former coach.

According to an ESPN report, Sirianni called Ertz this week to apologize.

“I’ll just keep my conversations with any guys private,” Sirianni said on Thursday. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Zach. Great football player, great person to be around. I’ve really got a lot of respect for Zach, and all the good things that he’s done, and my relationship with him.”

Ertz played his first eight-plus seasons with the Eagles, catching the go-ahead touchdown pass from Nick Foles in the team’s only Super Bowl win. He was traded to Arizona during the 2021 season after playing six games under Sirianni.

“Nick and I had a great relationship when I was there, and we still have a great relationship. It’s definitely been blown way out of proportion,” Ertz said to reporters. “We spoke. We’re good. There’s no ill feelings on my part, and I don’t think there are any ill feelings on his part.

It’s just something in the heat of the moment that probably got blown out of proportion and maybe a misunderstanding. But him and I are fine. Everyone knows how I feel about that place and that building, but at the same time, I love being here.”

Ertz was a three-time Pro Bowl selection in Philadelphia and set a single-season record for most catches by a tight end with 116 in 2018 while playing for Doug Pederson.

“I didn’t mean any disrespect by it,” Ertz said about his hard high-five with Sirianni. “It’s not a story in my eyes. I haven’t thought about this since Sunday.”

Eagles Aim for NFC East Title and No. 2 Seed as NFC Playoff Race Heats Up

The Eagles’ playoff situation heading into their Week 16 game against the Washington Commanders is clear for the NFC East and No. 2 seed in the playoffs. A victory would secure both the NFC East title and the No. 2 playoff seed for Philadelphia. However, the race for the NFC’s No. 1 playoff seed remains complicated. The Eagles, along with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, are tied with a 12-2 record. However, the Eagles would lose tiebreakers against both teams: the Lions would have a better conference record, and the Vikings would likely edge out Philly due to a stronger strength of victory. Thus, the Eagles must finish the season with at least one more win than either Detroit or Minnesota to have a realistic shot at the top playoff seed.

The good news for the Eagles is that Detroit and Minnesota will face off in Week 18, which guarantees one of those teams will suffer a loss. Detroit plays the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers in the next two weeks, while Minnesota faces the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. For the Eagles to take the No. 1 spot, they will need to win their final games and hope that Detroit or Minnesota falters.

In the NFC East standings, the Washington Commanders still have an outside chance of overtaking the Eagles for the division title. To do so, the Commanders would need to beat the Eagles and then win their final two games against the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. Additionally, they would require the Eagles to lose their final two games. If the Commanders win, they could also secure a playoff spot if the Falcons lose and either the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks also lose.

Dallas still has an unlikely shot at the playoffs, but it would need to win its final three games, including a victory over the Eagles, while hoping that the Commanders lose out. A loss by either the Cowboys or the Eagles would eliminate Dallas from playoff contention. As a result, the Eagles’ game against Washington will have major implications for both teams, as well as the playoff race for Dallas.

The rest of the NFC playoff picture is also tightening up. The Lions are in control of the NFC’s top seed for now but could fall as low as the No. 7 seed if they lose all three of their remaining games. The Packers need a win against the Saints and some help to clinch a playoff berth. Meanwhile, the 49ers have a slim chance of making the playoffs after a disappointing season following their Super Bowl appearance.

NFC Playoff Picture Summary

Team Record Status Key Notes
Eagles 12-2 Clinch NFC East & No. 2 Seed Must win to secure NFC East and No. 2 seed, need to outperform Lions/Vikings
Lions 12-2 Current No. 1 Seed Must avoid losing all final games, including Week 18 against the Vikings
Vikings 12-2 In the hunt for No. 1 Seed Could edge out Eagles with better strength of victory
Commanders 9-5 Outside chance to win NFC East Must win against Eagles, Falcons, and Cowboys, plus Eagles losses
Cowboys 6-8 Elimination possible Must win all 3 games and hope for Commanders’ losses to stay alive
Packers 10-4 Possible Playoff Berth Needs a win against the Saints and some help (Falcons, Rams, or Seahawks losses)
49ers 6-8 Slim chance of making playoffs Needs a strong finish, likely missing playoffs after the Super Bowl loss

Jayden Daniels Shines As Commanders Secure A Stunning Victory Against Eagles

Jayden Daniels may have effectively clinched the Rookie of the Year award with his latest performance.

The Washington Commanders quarterback orchestrated a game-winning drive with just six seconds remaining to secure a thrilling 36-33 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, further cementing his historic rookie campaign.

The second overall pick in the draft is enjoying one of the most remarkable rookie seasons in NFL history.

Trailing by five points and with under two minutes left on the clock, Daniels led the Commanders on a nine-play, 57-yard drive.

He connected with wide receiver Jamison Crowder for a nine-yard touchdown pass in the end zone, putting Washington ahead. A successful two-point conversion followed, sealing the win in dramatic fashion.

Daniels is the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw five touchdown passes in a single game, becoming just the sixth player overall to achieve this feat. But his record-breaking accomplishments didn’t stop there.

In addition to his five touchdown passes, Daniels set another historic mark by throwing four passing touchdowns in the final 30 seconds of regulation and overtime, the most by any player in a single season since the NFL merger.

This has truly been a season for the ages in Landover, Maryland.

For a franchise that has long struggled with consistent quarterback play, Daniels has been nothing short of sensational.

Under his leadership, the Commanders are on the verge of their first playoff appearance since 2020, with their playoff chances now above 90% as they sit at 10-5 with two weeks remaining.

They have not made the postseason since 2020 and haven’t won a playoff game since 2005—almost two decades ago.

Daniels looks poised to end Washington’s prolonged playoff drought.

The Commanders’ 10-5 record marks their best start since the 1992 season. While they currently trail the 12-3 Eagles by two games in the NFC East, Washington is in a strong position to secure a wildcard spot.

Daniels is now in a heated competition with fellow rookie quarterback Bo Nix for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but after his performance, it’s hard to imagine anyone else taking home the honor.

One fan on X declared, “He’s the rookie of the year, no doubt.” Another fan added, “Jayden Daniels with ice in his veins! Game-winning TD with 6 seconds left to beat the Eagles. This rookie is a lock for ROY—he’s got Mahomes-level magic!”

When comparisons to Patrick Mahomes start to surface, you know you’re doing something right.

Daniels and the Commanders will next face the Falcons at home before heading to Dallas for a regular-season finale against the Cowboys.

For the first time in years, Daniels has the Commanders on the brink of something truly special, and he could very well be bringing home some major hardware in the process.
