Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde is facing a significant setback, with reports indicating that he will miss the rest of the 2023-24 season due to a hamstring injury sustained during the Copa del Rey match against Athletic Bilbao on January 24.
Balde was forced to leave the field in the 23rd minute of the game, visibly distressed, and headed straight for the tunnel. His absence was notable, and he was replaced by Hector Fort.
The club has since confirmed that Balde has suffered an injury to the tendon in his right hamstring and will require surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign. A statement from Barcelona, released via the club’s website, stated:
“Tests reveal that first-team player Alejandro Balde has sustained an injury to the tendon in his right hamstring. He will undergo surgical intervention in the coming days, performed by Dr. Lasse Lempainen under the supervision of the Club’s medical team, in Turku, Finland.
Further updates will be provided following the procedure.” Balde, who is 20 years old, has been a key figure for Barcelona this season, featuring in 28 matches across various competitions. Although he contributed with a goal and an assist, his absence will be keenly felt by the team.
Barcelona manager Xavi has emphasized that the decision regarding surgery lies with Balde himself, with the club fully supporting him throughout the process. Xavi expressed this sentiment during a recent press conference, stating (via Barça Blaugranes):
“We will support him, as we have done with all the players facing similar decisions about whether to undergo surgery. We will offer him advice and stand by him. Ultimately, he will determine what is best for his career. The medical advice is different in his case compared to Ansu Fati’s.
However, the final decision rests with Alejandro.” With Balde opting for surgery, Barcelona will need to seek a suitable replacement for the remainder of the season, considering his significance to the team.
