The Arizona Diamondbacks kicked off their season in a big way by scoring 14 runs in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night.
This set new records for the franchise in hits, runs, and batters in a single inning. It’s also the highest number of runs scored in an inning on opening day for any team since 1900, according to Elias Sports.
The Rockies struggled to get three outs, taking 34 minutes for the D-backs to lead 16-1 after three innings.
During the explosive inning, the D-backs sent 18 batters to the plate, recording 13 hits, two walks, and one sacrifice fly. Despite the offensive barrage, Arizona surprisingly didn’t hit a home run.
Several players contributed, including Ketel Marte, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Christian Walker, Gabriel Moreno, and Geraldo Perdomo, all with two hits each, along with Corbin Carroll who walked twice.
Since 1900, only four teams have scored more than 14 runs in a single inning: the Red Sox in 1953 with 17 runs, the Rangers in 1996 with 16 runs, and the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1952 with 15 runs.
