Pep Guardiola has expressed sympathy for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United as they prepare for the weekend’s Manchester derby.
With the Premier League title race intensifying, City, just one point behind Liverpool, are set to face United at the Etihad Stadium. Despite United’s recent 2-1 defeat to Fulham, they managed a crucial 1-0 victory against Forest in the FA Cup.
However, reports suggest that United’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is considering potential managerial changes for next season. Guardiola acknowledged the pressure on big clubs to maintain success, empathizing with Ten Hag given the relentless scrutiny in modern football.
“At big clubs, winning is paramount. It’s not just United; it’s the expectation everywhere. But continuing the legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson’s incredible success is challenging,” Guardiola conceded. “Managing under such scrutiny isn’t easy, and the patience that clubs once had seems scarce in today’s game.”
Guardiola also addressed the injury setback suffered by City winger Jack Grealish during their recent match against Luton. Grealish, visibly distraught, was forced off the field and will miss the upcoming derby.
“He won’t be available this weekend, and the timeline for his return is uncertain,” Guardiola explained. “Fortunately, we have alternatives. Setbacks are inevitable, but it’s how we respond to them that truly matters.”
