Saarbrücken’s astonishing German Cup journey persisted on Tuesday with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in their quarterfinal clash, delayed by rain.
Kai Brünker sealed the remarkable win with a stoppage-time goal on the counterattack, extending Saarbrücken’s fairytale run that saw them eliminate Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt in previous rounds.
“I’m ecstatic, it’s surreal,” exclaimed Brünker amidst jubilant celebrations. “Our team showed incredible mentality. I couldn’t be prouder of every single player. Just look at their faces!”
The third-division side now faces second-division Kaiserslautern in the semifinals on April 3. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, the sole remaining Bundesliga representative, will take on Fortuna Düsseldorf the following day.
Originally slated for February 7, the match was postponed due to heavy rain rendering the pitch unplayable. Despite efforts to improve conditions with new grass, the rain persisted, creating a challenging playing surface marred by clumps of sod.
Gladbach seized an early lead through Robin Hack’s eighth-minute strike, swiftly countered by Amine Naifi’s equalizer for Saarbrücken just three minutes later. As the rain continued to pour, both teams grappled with the adverse conditions.
In a dramatic climax, Saarbrücken defender Fabio Di Michele Sanchez initiated a decisive attack down the left flank, delivering a cross for Brünker to clinch victory with a precise finish inside the left post during injury time.
“We were determined not to concede in the second half, and we achieved that goal,” reflected Saarbrücken coach Rüdiger Ziehl. “To then secure victory with a late strike, whether from a throw-in, a free kick, or a counter, is simply unbelievable.”
