Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider recently made comments suggesting he may not be fully aware of the New York Giants’ plans regarding their quarterback situation for the upcoming season.
During his introductory press conference, newly signed Giants quarterback Drew Lock indicated that the team’s management had communicated to him that Daniel Jones would indeed be the starting quarterback for the 2024 season.
This revelation came after Lock signed a one-year deal with the Giants in free agency. Schneider, on his radio show on Seattle Sports 710AM, stated that New York had presented Lock with the opportunity to compete for the starting position.

Lock, who spent the past two seasons with the Seahawks following his trade from the Denver Broncos as part of the Russell Wilson deal, started two games in 2023 in place of the injured Geno Smith.
The Giants’ interest in Lock is understandable, given Jones’ recovery from a torn ACL and the need for quarterback depth. With Tyrod Taylor joining the New York Jets as their backup, Lock’s acquisition fills an important roster gap.
However, there remains uncertainty surrounding Jones’ status for the upcoming season, with his contract presenting challenges for the Giants if they were to move on from him. Releasing Jones would result in a significant dead cap charge of $47.1 million, making it financially impractical this offseason.
Despite this, speculation persists about the Giants potentially targeting a quarterback in the upcoming draft. Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy is reportedly a top target for the Giants, especially with the team holding the sixth overall pick.
Even if the Giants draft McCarthy, it’s conceivable that Jones could retain his starting role at the beginning of the regular season. This scenario could leave Lock in a precarious position, potentially as the third-string quarterback at some point during the season.
Lock’s contract with the Giants is for one year, with $5 million guaranteed. With 28 career starts since entering the NFL in 2019, the 27-year-old quarterback brings experience and depth to the Giants’ roster.
