Eagles GM Howie Roseman Talks 2024 NFL Draft Strategy After Record-Tying 8 Trades

The Philadelphia Eagles made a significant splash during the NFL draft, tying a league record with eight trades in the seven-round draft era, showcasing their proactive approach under general manager Howie Roseman. Roseman’s strategy was aimed at acquiring targeted players on Day 3 while accumulating future picks simultaneously.

The Eagles executed a series of trades, including sending picks No. 50, 53, and 161 to the Washington Commanders in exchange for picks No. 40, 78, and 152, and subsequently, trading picks No. 78 to the Houston Texans for pick No. 86 and 123. They continued to maneuver, exchanging picks with teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, and others, culminating in a total of eight trades.

One of the most notable trades involved moving up in the second round to select cornerback Cooper DeJean from Iowa, a player who was widely regarded as a Round 1 prospect. Additionally, they secured Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the fifth round, son of former Eagles linebacker and franchise icon Jeremiah Trotter.

The Eagles’ draft strategy primarily involved trading down to accumulate additional picks or trading out altogether, as evidenced by their dealings with teams like the Dolphins and Texans. Despite this, they managed to address key needs and acquire promising talent at what seems to be excellent value.

The Eagles’ 2024 draft class appears strong on paper, with potential to address roster needs and inject talent into the team. As the offseason progresses and workouts commence, the true impact of these draft selections will become clearer, providing insight into the team’s future direction and development.
